Thanks for the offer! Let's discuss it more on Saturday.

The crucial thing for me is to get it fixed before Sharks at the Lake. I don't want to drive there and back without AC. At the same time I will not have much time myself with this new job.

I'm willing to pay to get it done, as long as it's done right and on time.

Awesome! I already sent them a message. These guys are just at the opposite part of Stuttgart from where I grew-up... They are pretty close to the Porsche factory.

Nicole, I had a Chrysler minivan converted a few years back - what a mistake! The inefficiencies of the newer freon replacments made the compressor work much harder (and it never cooled as well as when it was new).

I recently had my '84 928S checked out by an AC shop who told me all I needed was a re-charge and basically to not convert to the new stuff (for all the resons I stated above). AC works great now!

Nicole,
If the evaporator indeed has a leak (which I agree would be incredibly rare), and the leak is accessible, Earl Gillstrom has a sure fire cure!! One of the 928 owners in our area had a damaged/leaking rear AC evaporator about 4-5 years back. There was a bit of oil at the leak, so it was obvious what the problem was. Earl evacuated the system completely with his AC pump, kept the pump turned on and cleaned the leak area thoroughly with Brake Cleaner, Acetone, etc. He then applied a dab of freshly prepared epoxy to the leak area, keeping the evacuation pump on to draw the viscous epoxy fluid into the tiny hole where the freon had been leaking. After the epoxy was cured, he refilled the system with R-12 and it has worked ever since - no sign of leakage!!
Pretty inexpensive repair vs a new evaporator!!
Cheers, and good luck. I hope it is only that the system is low on R-12 (and I'm in the "keep R-12" camp).

Haven't you had a slight leak at the evaporator for a while now......I'm sure its a major PITA to fix...but it does give you an excuse to replace all the HVAC vacuum actuators inside the dash WYAIT..... Might save some headaches later!!
