Default New fuel pumps and still no start.

Just replaced in-tank fuel pump, hose to exterior pump and filter on the 89 s4. Before it was not starting and before then the pumps were VERY loud so I thought that would be the culprit. Whats REALLY odd is when I still had the car jacked up in the rear and cover off I started the car fine twice to check for any leaks....I was feeling good I had found the problem. Put the cover back on and lowered the car on all fours and.....back to no start!

Any ideas where to go next?

what was the last thing you fixed before this happened, IE before you replaced the fuel pumps??
That might be a place to start, also of course check all of the elex connections and the CE panel for water damage. (a leaking blower box seal)
If you find any fuse thats corroded , it might be a good idea to replace all of them and then pull every relay and check the blade connectors any that are corroded should be opened to check for dirty contacts get a fuse relay chart here www.928gt.com

Fuse #42 and relay XX power the fuel pump - worth a check before going deeper (XX swaps with many other relays, like the horn for an audible test).

BTW - not trying to be a smart a$$, but did you add gas to the tank after draining to install the in-tank pump?

Logical extension of Stan's comment above--

It ran before you put the covers back on. Did you pinch or pull a wire out during the cover install? Easy to check.

There's your problem , Dean; it's a FEMALE!!!! You just took her half way there before you covered her up and let her down!!!

MrMerlin...All I changed was distributer caps and rotors. I see no sign of water damage in the pass. floor board area.

Garth...Ya I made sure I had about 4 gallons of fuel in there. Fuse is good but still need to check relay...That will be the next test.

DrBob....pulled panel again and all LOOKs okay....no pinched wires.

Charly....Your right...thats what I get being single as long as I have. I forget these things.

Dean,
We know the external pump was making a noise but how was the internal pump?
Knowing the pumps are good I agree that the realy needs checking.
You have some new 53's so swap it out. Is the pump running when you crank the engine?
Do you know how to jump the fuel pump relay?
Roger

Well it cranked! Have no idea why. I hate when this happens...your never sure its really fixed or if it will rear its ugly head again at the worst possible time.

Roger...I went ahead and changed the in-tank pump but the old one LOOKED like it was still in good shape. Rubber hose was in one piece. After it cranked it ran like a lawn mower and throwing blueish smoke for about 2 minutes....then It changed all at once to a smooth, no smoke idle. ????

Well...the starter would always turn the motor over with no problem. It just wouldn't start running.

what did it sound like when you tried to start it but it wouldn't start? Did you hear any clicking or other sound?

sorry Dean not to be a Smart A$$, but when you say it cranked what do you mean?
Is it turning over but not starting.
Was your original post made to indicate the starters turning but no ignition.
I would be able to offer more possibilities if you can be more descriptive, to say the least these are vauge descriptions

yes...I guess I wasn't real clear. The starter was turning the motor over but no ignition. It finally started but ran very poorly and blueish smoke out the exhaust. After about 2 minutes it just all at once stopped smoking and ran very smooth.

check the coil connections and make positively sure the coil wire to (cap and coil) are fully seated also that the coil grond wires are connected to each head

When running "like a lawnmower", would running on 4 cylinders capture the essence of that ugly interval? If so, should it happen again, lift the rug flap away from the EZK/LH modules to see if either the red or green diodes on the ignition monitoring relay are lit. If one diode is on, then one of a coil/coil wire/dist cap button/grd. wire/ign. ctrl. module/ thermocouple ( or RTD) in exh. manifold ... or the $$$ relay itself is cooked - or in your case, half baked, as the issue is intermittant.
I detest half baked ...
