Thanks for the offer Mark, but I live in MI.

Andrew, the car sounds sweet. I think it would rattle the dash out though.

+1 on the nothing needs dropped. However, I did remove the AC condensor to make things a bit easier. Plan on an hour per side. Also spray down all the nuts prior with your favorite lube stuff to make the job a bit easier on the removal...

Although its a hassle i'd drop the crossmember. I have mine down right now and there is gobs of room up there to work with. Im going to pull my stock exhaust headers to get them ceramic coated while im at it.
Id add a set of headers but im not sure how..or if..they would mate up to the Xpipe. Anyone done that?

Tony-

I looked at putting "real" headers on a year or so ago and was advised that they will not mate up to your existing exhaust. You would need to get something fabbed up, but I'm sure a man with your connections could do it quite reasonably.

Ofcourse they wont. Long tubes go to all the way to the bottom of the car. Shorties or what we have, are terminated way before they reach the bottom. If the X,Y H pipe was built to fit a stock manifold, it for sure won’t work with long tube headers.

I'm getting ready to install my replacement engine and I want to do it with the msds headers already bolted on. BTW, this is on my 79' track car. I had some broken exhaust studs that I had to drill out and I feel better installing and torquing the header fasteners while it's on the engine stand rather than in the cramped quarters of the engine bay.
Where I am right now: new engine on stand, no fly wheel and headers are bolted up. Old engine still in car, no headers or any accessories. Only the block and heads left.

So what do I have to remove or do to get this thing in there with the headers attached?

PS..car is on a lft so I have easy access.

Thanks in advance

Probably the engine cross member and install from below ???? Porsche at the factory put in the engine ,torque tube, trans as one big lump by lowering the body down on it. So that is how the car was designed ... It might be possible to drop in from above with headers but I do not recall anyone everdoing it. And I know Mark has always removed his first for the last 20 years .

You would need a SERIOUS angle on the engine at entry from the engine hoist Dave. I mean that you would crank the engine balance bar on the hoist so that the headers are pointed down at, say, a 45 degree angle and then try to get them to stick under the firewall.

Unless they are stock headers (I didn't assume so).

This is what I was assuming but I'm holding out hope that someone will chime in with a " oh yeah..I did That. It sucked but it's doable".

The other problem would be that the headers cover the cover on the bottom of the bellhousing. You need the cover off so you can reattach the torque tube, but then it can't be reinstalled can it? My headers clear it by maybe a 1/4".
