While I'm spending money on new parts...what are the odds of fixing my gas cap? I read a few threads about what a beeyatch it is to take apart and I think mine is even further gone. It does not ratchet at all (busted pawl), will not tighten fully (gets just so far and spins) and actually requires upward pressure to remove it (otherwise just spins the other direction). To top it off, it's not even the original cap - the PO replaced it a while back. In other words it's loose in every possible way, no way could I track the car let alone pass a gas cap test, and doesn't even fit my keys.

Sounds like its locked... if your key doesn't fit it thats a real possibility right...?

Busted pawls we (alan?) can fix now(Have just shipped out 4 steel ones here in Oz.), but yours sounds like it has a bit more than the usual problem. If you can get it apart (3 knives, 4 hands etc), you should eb able to see whats gone. Sounds like a broken pawl for starts, and maybe its teeth are worn to the point where they wont grip enough to tighten even.

That's a distinct possibility, if locking it means spinning freely without tightening properly. I just checked pricing on them and nearly had a heart attack...almost as much as the new brake rotors I just ordered. This sucker is coming apart and I'm looking into rekeying.

Mark - once you get past the hurdle of getting the red cover off - the dissassembly is easy...I suspect your pawl is OK since it appears to be locked (spins freely rather than the ratchet one way and lock firmly the other as you get when unlocked).

The lock barrel is easily removed and you could then send it to a locksmith (928intl) to get the tumblers matched to your key (assuming you have a spare). BTW - at this point you can simply screw the white part back on as a non locking cap - ugly but fully functional.

If it is indeed locked your pawl must be OK since they fail-'safe' (as in unlocked - so that you can get it off...)

Or, you can just jam a couple nails or somesuch between the outer red cap and the inner white part.

No more spinning.

When you are low on gas, late for an appointment and the gas cap spins both way, you do what you must. I used a sheetrock screw to lock the shield to the body.

You gotta love car-maintenance procedures that start out with "boil some water." You should have seen my wife's face when I asked if she had a pot I could boil my gas cap in.... I'll be doing this tonight, if nothing else getting it unlocked so I can tighten it properly.

Gas cap is apart and it's definitely locked - the pawl is in the retracted position and it's in perfect condition btw. But getting the cylinder apart has me stumped. I want to unlock it and then re-key for my key, and the instructions look pretty straightforward. The UK instructions say to "Push the top half of the cylinder out of the bottom half - it splits on a level with the two 'ears'" but nothing pushes out on mine, I think because it's locked. Any pointers here?

How far apart do you have it? If you can see the pawl teeth retracted, you should have an off white nylon assembly in your hand, with two sq 5/16" ears at the top that key into the red part when assembled. There is a sideways wire clip through this nylon that retains the lock assembly inside it - winkle this out with a pointy object, sharp knife tip etc, then the lock tumbler will pull out - you may have to load the pawl teeth a little to take sideways spring load off the cam end of the lock body. Once this is out the pawl should almost fall out. My guess is the spring is broken, jammed, or the end of the lock body is not doing its job somehow. One the lock is out you can remove and shuffle the tines(?) once the key is removed. DOnt lose the springs!!! Maybe do this inside a plastic bag to ensure nothing gets lost?
If it wont unlock - does the pawl rattle or move when the assy is shaken? Can you move it when the key is in the unlocked position? can you feel load when turning the key? Does the key rotate 180 degrees?
