Delighted to hear that the engine was OK. I inspected that honing process for you carefully to be sure it was right before we shipped.

It's getting ridiculous Carl. You did a top notch packing job. I like the idea and convenience of using the tub with the lock down lid for packaging the block (I'm still using it to carry the block around. ), but it appears that the shippers will spare no attempt to abuse the packaging. The holes on the bottom are a total question mark. How can two holes/cracks form like that? The bottom of the box was sheeted with thick styrofoam, no part of the block was in contact with the floor of the tub, and still, broken in two spots. The crack on the side? Makes no sense at all. It almost looks like they used tub to play some "forklift bowling" at the warehouse. I agree, what a quandry on how to ship these things. Even boxing on a pallet isn't a guarantee. When Stan originally shipped me the block, he palatized it. When it finally showed up, there was no pallet.

Bottom line is, the block did all arrive safe and sound from Wisconsin, and the piston did show up a day later.

The block has been at Ken O'sage's garage for the past two nights, where he is currenlty preparing two OB racecars in tandem, one for himself and one for his wife. He's been kind enough to let me borrow some of his polishing tools. Just getting started here, and I'll tell ya these pics do not do the block justice, its is very very shiny. It's going to be awesome when its done being polished.

Here's getting started in the "V".

Here's a 3/4 view from the rear:

I'll post more when I get to the next stage of polishing.

One more thing on the boring job. I haven't had a chance to break out the gauges yet, but based upon the digital calipers, US Chrome looks to have really nailed the minimum tolerances on the cylinders that I measured. Very nice.

We have wooden crates that are built out of 2x4's and plywood that we use to ship blocks back and forth with no problems yet. They may lose them but they can't damage them without serious intent.

You are correct, when I ship something of value I always insure it for $10,000. I have a friend at UPS and he told me exactly the same as what you are saying. He said 10K was the magical number, but I'm sure 20K is better.

I had not thought of that but I bet its true. We have been insuring them for 4K or so... I know if you insure it for a 10,000 and it does get damaged - you dont get 10K, you submit actual replacement receipts and you get actual replacement costs plus a refund of the shipping. So I always figured it made no sense to insure well beyond the true replacement cost.

But now, hearing this... sure - why not insure it for 10K just to let them know we mean it?

Scott from Renegade shipped me a motor in pieces in an Igloo cooler. Pretty smart. The big cooler was double-walled, of course, with foam between the two walls. A Handle on each end, a locking lid. Worked really well.
