They all do that. It's not a problem. [/used car salesman]

That looks pretty exciting. Nice job keeping it on the asphalt.

I gotta tell ya, the instant I saw the steam coming thru the hood, I had visions of a series of 360's into the corner. I'll be damned if I'm gonna let a corner worker have that much fun.

The off-track happened between 14-15. Went in a little too hot and a little too early into 14....Paul did the right thing and just steered straight into the grass instead of trying to make 15. We were first car out that session, and there was nobody else near us. I think it happened on the second lap of the session.

I only ended up with a few laps of the first session. I'm having a problem getting it to work on my Vista System but Kibort gave me a few tip's on how to open it with sound.
I may e-mail it to you and Gerry and let you decide if you want to post it.

Lets see, Gerry was spilling fuel, Charlie was leaking coolant, Rich was leaking air out of his tire, Brian (and Charlie) was losing brake fluid, and I wet my pants when I drove off the track. I think the only thing we missed was ATF, and Brian took care of that his second time at Thunderhill with his PS leak. Most 928s leak oil, so anything we missed?

Glad I could be assistance to my Porsche and Taco Tuesday brother. Now that the tires are broken in a little, I'm going to use them at my next DE, those 16" sidewalls were too flexy.

Maybe you guys should bring your 944's to the next run . I'm 3/3 at my DE's (Infineon, Laguna Seca, Thunderhill) without mechanical issues . Too bad that's with less speed and less skill, but I'm still learning! I did hit 110 mph on the straightaway before turn 1.

Pic of me and Geri.

You have a beautiful 944 Allen. The last time I took my 944 to Thunderhill, I left my clutch there. Driver error of course.

MAN, WHAT are you guys doing out there??? I don't think at TWS I have EVER seen a 928 NOT finish! I have blown a hose (that little tiny piece that goes under the air cleaner box from the block to the heater core) and I think that is IT! Friends fixed it for me in 20 min while I was teaching my next student and I never missed a session!

I have burned up quite a few pairs of front tires, but NEVER had a brake problem of ANY kind! You guys have some very experienced 928 racers out there in CA you might want to actually TALK to them at some point! There is no excuse for a reasonably well maintained 928 not to finish a DE!

In fact I have 10,000 DE miles on my '88 S4 (or close to it), I have also DEed my '94 GTS (2X or 3X) and my '92 Euro GTS (1X or 2X)! Street tires on the GTS's and R's on the S4 (from the 2nd DE on)!

And if you are good you can REALLY back a 928 into a corner! My race car (thanks Mark Anderson!) is REALLY, REALLY fun to back into the corners under hard braking, but the slicks are VERY nice and forgiving like that! It is harder to do that with street rubber...

Good luck w/ future events, I look forward to seeing the pics!

It takes what???? 5 min to change pads in a 928! Buy a pair of Pagid orange (as suggested) and a set of factory style normal street pads. When you get to the track take your front tires off and put in the orange pads. Go drive the car around the pit area riding the brakes for a bit to get them all nice and comfy w/ the rotors then go have fun and when you are done for the day change them back out! Piece of cake!

OH, if you are not running a 911 Turbo brake balance bar, I would suggest doing that ASAP! That might also be why some of you guys were not able to back the car in under braking or get it to rotate very well. Stock a 928 uses almost NO rear brake. That Turbo brake bar will increase the rear brake pressure 3X I think it is... From something like 18 bar to 45 bar. It is really a nice improvement that you will feel RIGHT AWAY!

I don't know you guys experience levels either so talking about big time trail braking may be putting the cart WAY ahead of the horse. I have been doing the track stuff a long time (but not as long as Mark Anderson, Mark Kibort and a few others for sure!) so it is just second nature to me...

Sorry, any of the Moto-X guys and Motorcycle road racers will understand the term, some of the Moto-X guys might also call it squaring off the corner. It is extreme trail braking.

I was just looking at the rest of the posts and it looks like you guys have maybe 3 to 5 or 6 DE's under your belt. At about 5 on some slower sharper corners you ought to be working the trail braking angle. At 2-4 DE's probably not so much.

So, extreme trailing throttle or hard trail braking is what the term backing it into the corner means.

With the slicks I can back it in to the corner and then use the throttle to control it with tire spin off the throttle (spinning tires off the corner is NOT the fast way though let me tell you). I DO NOT have the axle pinned in my race car either and no plan to do so.

Oh, it also helps to have as wide of front tires as you can get on the 928 w/o over tiring the rear. Stiffer rear sway bar is also a good idea too. These things will all help the 928 turn better. You can also work w/ alignment setting as well... Again find someone really fast on tires of the same width ratio front vs. rear as you are running and try their settings.

Good luck and happy tracking! DE's are GREAT fun and a GREAT PLACE to learn car control!

Best,
James

Well I flushed the system and replaced with superblue, but then spotted this problem. I'm pretty sure there are no exceptions to the "vents must point backwards" rule.

nice picture! fire the mechanic. dont feel too bad, the Mercedes S500 has 14" rotors, but there is one part number for the rotors, even though they are assemtrical. (can you believe it?) anyway, i was helping a friend change his brakes and just was very uncomfortable putting that one rotor that was vented incorrectly for that one side. we double checked with the specs and it calls for one part number, as opposed to the 928 that has a left and right.

i dont think it is a huge difference in a DE type of activity.

This is twice in a row, in two different 928's, that I have boiled the fluid at a DE event only to find the rotors are backwards. The first time, I was the ace mechanic that installed them.
