Yes, I've committed to restringing. Just a question of when. I don't use the car as a DD. Hell, I drove it a total of 250 miles between December '07 and the beginning of this month (I track my gas fill ups in a book in my car).

I like the idea of a RL lunch. Any volunteers? A TB job should take about a day. Here in Bal'mer, we have some mighty fine crab cakes and tasty local brews... Only the best for the helpers, of course!

I have a baby on the way, though (a month from Tuesday is the scheduled due date) so this has either got to happen very soon (in the next two weeks) or it won't happen for a while. Yikes. (That's why I asked about putting it back together.)

Thanks to everyone for the info, patience, and help. I wouldn't even thought of cracking open the TB covers myself if not for this board.

Thats the confidence level Mike needs...............the sweet spot of the engine where cams, valves, pistons and crank are all 'spaced'!!!

What's a 'writeup', and why would you need one?

How old is the current belt?

If you put a new belt on, leave the passenger cam alone, and set the driver to +1°. You should recheck the timing in a 1000 miles, as the belt will stretch and create ~2° retard.
The current belt is about 2 years, 5k miles, old.

I like write ups. Especially when they're written for wannabe hack mechanics like me! My brother is a professional mechanic... and I'm a shop rat when I can be. I've done some tough stuff, and I always watch carefully when he and I are fixing something "together." I'm very talented at holding flashlights, for example! Seriously, though, the TB job is ambitious for me. I'll need all the help I can get. The WSM only goes so far...

crab cakes and tasty local brews would normaly attract me in a moment..........a little far though.

It shouldn't take that long Mike.........perhaps there's a 928OC member in the area who can help..............let me search.

In that case...put it back together and deal with it after you start having time again (probalby when the baby starts to have a regular shecdule, around 3-4mths). You don't want something unexpected to come knowing you are this close to having a baby. Get it back to the way it was and at least you can still drive it if you need to. If you take it apart and soemthing comes up.... it might sit in pieces for a loooong time. Took me 2 years to get around to fix mine. Good luck with the baby!

Re adjusting the T-belt (not changing) should only take a couple hours at most. You only have to remove the two top T-belt covers, nothing more.

why, oh why, are you BOTH in Canada? eh? j/k I'd love an experienced observer to guide me through this so I don't do anything stupid. Might take more than an experienced observer to accomplish that...

Hello Mike I am doing this job again to put Ken's tensioner on and I had the cam gears move on me while stringing the belt. It's still not that bad of a job just pay attention, take your time and all the guys here will help you. I can say I wouldn't be able to have this car if it wasn't for the help I get here!!

I suck at reading directions and manuals but I have done this job with the patience and help from all the experienced people on Rennlist.

Ok Mike now that I'm done sucking up to the members If you can trouble shoot what you have in this thread YOU CAN DO THIS JOB!!!!!!!
Cheers
Matt

forgot to mention this earlier... my hex washers behind the cam bolts are NOT 32mm. My 32mm wrench can hold them, but they're either 30mms or 31mms. Too bad I don't have a 30 or 31 mm wrench

yet

YMMV.

Thanks! I've been watching your post with interest; more so now than before, of course. Looks to me like you have plenty of mechanical ability. Manual? Who needs a stinkin' manual?! (me! ) I loves me some manuals.

Looks like you're in great shape. Hopefully I'm not too far behind.

They must be 31mm.. I have 30 and 32mm spanners for removing oil cooler lines from my radiator, and neither of them quite worked for the hex washers. I wasn't sure whether it was just one of those odd non-metric 928 parts (there are a few occurrences).

I ended up using a large adjustable spanner.

Could be 3/4 BSF or 1-1/4 AF non metric size.
