Default 928 operating expense comparison

Today I made the mistake to go over all of my expenses for my 928....after dropping $$$$ on my fuel injectors I wanted to see how comparatively "expensive" my 928 is to my other two vehicles.....to make things fair I removed expenses from the 928 that were either cosmetic or not needed upgrades (wheels, stereo, etc) that my other cars do not have.... I did not factor in gasoline since its risen so much there is no sense in looking at old reciepts, even though I track every single tank of gas through the 928 since 2005....

The results were quite interesting!! I added in payments (if any), repairs, service, registration and insurance.

My 2006 Acura which I still pay payments on costs me $584 a month (with no major repair expense as its under warranty & hasn't needed any major repairs), my 2002 Saturn (off warranty for years, I own it) costs me $111 a month. My 928 costs $152 a month.....or about $40 per month more than the Saturn!!!!! BUT I've only owned the Saturn for about a year...before that I was paying $318 a month payment.....so that makes the 928 FAR cheaper!!

Even if I include everything I've bought for the 928 its only $250 per month over the 4 years I've owned it......not bad really......

Another aspect thats interesting is my Saturn was $17,500 when new....I'd be lucky to get $6k today......so I "lost" $11,500 or 65%. I paid $15,500 for my 928 in 2004....I am sure I could get close to that today.....let say I sold it for $13,500, which I think would be an excellent price for the VERY lucky person that got sharky.....I only lost $2,000 or 12%.....

Bottom line.....if you take care of your shark and keep it over a period of time, they aren't that expensive to own (unless you get really unlucky)

It will be interesting to see if the cost will remain about the same when you start using sharky daily. Keep us posted.

Since I drive sharky about 4k miles a year now & maybe 6k as a DD I don't think it will change that much...... Plus my next vehicle is supposed to arrive late July to assume DD duty!!!

It would be nice from those who use their sharks as a daily driver. This post made me think of what it costs to maintain a shark over the years and we all know that these sharks can be costly to maintain. Some may not want know the real #'s

I got lucky with mine (as it came with alot of records and early on most done by porsche dealer(ouch)), but what an eye-opener it was to add these all up over the years, oh yea this shark currently has approx 120K.

Mine actually cost me much less when it was a daily driver...these cars don't like to sit! Now I work from home so I might drive 5k a year total. I'm just doing my part to help the environment by cutting back from the 30k a year I was driving!

I figured up my maintenance and repair costs over the period of ownership, almost all as a daily driver (120K miles over 7.5 years) and it came to $85/month.

My '86 was less than $75/month for the 8 years and 70k miles I drove it daily.

Sans tires and stereo?
Wow - $34 and dropping the longer it runs! Only the initial $300 to straighten her out.... Or do we count the $1,000 purchase price

I have a feeling this one beats the depreciation factor

Thats not bad really..... The longer I own sharky it should go down since everything is now up to date!!

I have drove my 84 for a year now and the only thing I did other than fluid changes and routine is a L Jet cold start valve. Even found a good deal on it through e-bay.

My 86.5 was a daily driver for 13 years. I bought the car in '92 with 70K miles on the odometer and I put another 155,000 miles on it and spent roughly $45K over the 13 years. That included new wheels, 2 - 100K mile services, a rebuilt transmission, intake refresh, power steering pump, 3 - TB/WP services, motor mounts, a ton of A/C work, 2 - new windshields and a few upgrades like chips, RMB, cast hole rotors, etc.

That works out to $0.29 per "smile". 2/3 of the money spent was on labor - not parts!

I bought the '87 in '05 and it's only been serviced once by a shop and that was when I first bought it. I had them go through it to correct some past service "defeciencies" and dropped $5K on that - which included transmission work. I've put 16K miiles on it. The car has never been back to a shop. I do all my own work now, MM, pan gasket, new alternator, new rotors, pads, oil pressure sending unit, 100K service, vacuum system repairs, lighting upgrades, etc. Even at that, my current cost per mile is $0.31 mile - but its going down. This summer I'll do the intake refresh, new injectors and replace the fuel lines and P/S hoses and rebuild the P/S pump.

The more work you can do yourself, the more affordable the car becomes - especially if you use it as a DD.

Do yourself a favor, don't add in crap you really didn't need.

Like an X-pipe/cats, new wheels, etc, the cost per month will much lower.
