I was in the process of removing the clutch slave to lock the flywheel and ended up in a brief wrestling match with the piston. As soon as I claimed victory the piston rod dropped on to the floor.
So I have 3 questions before I order a new one
1. Should the piston be able to removed ?
2. There is a rusty color paste on the bellowed end - is this normal???
3. There is a star washer - where does this go?
Thanks in Advance

1. Yes. When putting it back in you can angle it through the hole in the bottom of the bellhousing and push it back into the slave cylinder while holding the pushrod with some needle nose pliers.
2. It's probably either copper anti-seize or Porsche's montagepaste, which is similar but more expensive
3. I don't recall any star washers, maybe someone who'd been there previously put one on the slave cylinder mounting bolts?
PS- Clean the snot out of the slave cylinder mounting holes before you mount the flywheel lock, you don't want to strip 'em with the # of times the lock has to come on and off....

HTML Code:
the piston rod dropped on to the floor.
The rod just goes back into the hole in the bell housing; you have to be careful to ensure it goes into the small hole in the metal plate at the back of the bell housing. If you take off the rubber bung at the bottom of the bell housing, get a strong light and twist your head around at a funny angle then you can just about see the hole. You need to be carefuk that the rod does not miss the hole and go down the side of the plate.
It can be hard to compress the slave enough to get the 2 bolts back in, myself I used a longer bolt on the bottom (it goes right through) to inch the slave in.

also do not remember a star washer

The rubber diaphragm/boot and the washer and all that is normally internal to the slave cylinder would normally stay installed on the slave. The rod itself, without any need to undo any kind of fastener, can be pulled out leaving the system sealed.
You probably ought to consider a new slave or at least buy a rebuild kit because that one is looking kind of beat.
