nope, not the one in the car. Remember a motor for sale for 200 bucks a while back on here. This is it. It was local so i bought it. Heads are fine, crank, rods, valves, cams, intake. Complete engine. I just got done tearing it down. The pistons that came out of that/those cylinders appear to be OK. just need a good clean up. Its nice having "spares" im up to 64 valves now "spare" Gawwwd forbid!

Ill post on it later in a new thread, but im looking at what to do with the toasted block...Im probaly going to have it blasted then plated in nickel,or just polished. Get some nice glass for the top and have some etching put on it...turn it into a garage coffe table or somthing? dunno? I could just sell it for scrap at the lcoal metal place for a few bucks also. Anyway, ill post on it later.

OK, if you didn't wince a bit when you saw Tony's picture, you probably don't do your own work.

Ouch.

I always enjoy seeing carnage pictures! I sure hope my block is not cracked! What would casue a block to crack like that? Severe overheating?

Got a little further ahead last night (only working an hour each evening). The cams are out with the tensioner and the oil filler neck is removed. I remember seeing what Tony and others built to get the oil out of suspension and since it works so well for them, I’ll just duplicate it. No work will be done tonight on the car but Saturday the exhaust if getting disconnected and the head is being pulled. After seeing all those pics of the cracked block I’m anxious to see what mine looks like (I really hope its’ only a HG and nothing more).
So far only pulling just one head has been pretty simple. Much less work then when I had to pull both heads then recondition them, install a new WP and T-belt. I would say it’s about 25% of what it takes do compared to what I had to when I bought the car.

If it's only the HG, I have everything, EXCEPT a headgasket, to complete this job. If it's only the HG, I'll post a request to see if anyone has a single one for sale.

Ran out of time today to finish pullig the head. Ran into a littel problem. When started removing the steering shaft U joint. I have removed this in the past (6 years ago) but for the life of me, I can't remember how. Tried loosend the clamping bolts and to slide the joint up the shaft but that's not enough to clear the part that comes out of the steering rack. Then I disconnected the rubber "coupler" but then I realized there is a metal rod part at the end that slides into the aluminnim "steering shaft". Anyone knows what the trick is?

The head is OFF!! It was the headgasket, the metal ring (I think it's called a fire ring) was split in half. The leading endge was gone and the coolant came in from the top side of that cylinder (2nd from the front, on the driver side). They cylinder looks great (no corrosion what so ever, no wear either) and so does the head. Now its' time to get a new HG and start refreshing some of the other parts. That cylinder wasn't yet totally steam cleaned so I must have cought the leak right after it happened.

Wow, seems like a lifetime since I last touched the 928. Tonight FINALLY re started the work again. The head has been off the engie since last summer. I have sprayed the bores with penetrating oil and coverd it with plastic and rags. Looks like all the cylinders stayed intact over the winter. This is good cause the car sat outside all year.

First step was to take pics of the restart, then slowly started scraping the gasket surfaces. That's about all I can have time for tonight. Here are some pics of the engine as it was and a close up of the cylinders as well as the cylinder where the gasket failed.

Please tell me that's not underwear stuffed in your engine. The 928 gods will not be pleased.

That is detonation, no doubt about that.
Check the rod bearings also.

The way the fire ring melted shows as it was cut with a torch. I don't see any sing of detonation on the piston so my theory was that it ran lean (had a failing injector in that cylinder).

If the engine was out of the car, I would check the bearings but since it's not, and I have a complete spare engine sitting next to the car, I'll take my chanses and leave the bottom end alone.

Ohh but I'm afraid it is ..... stuffed right into the J pipe.......but no worries, it was washed before it went to "rag" duty. I use anyting that I can get my hands on. Sometimes in the summer, when it's hot and I'm working on the car, I wear one as a hat too. I also use my old socks, towels, T-shirts and pretty much any old clothes that I don't use, to soak up oil in the garage.
