Erratic Overheating
I was driving the S4 home from the cottage on a hot day. Temperature indicator was just fine all the way down. Slowed for urban area, and all of a sudden I'm overheating. Big time. Pull the car over, the engine compartment didn't really seem all that hot for an overheating car (and I've seen a few). Dropped in a quart of oil, which actually overfilled the dipstick by about 1/4" on the basis that any cooler liquid might help (911's are actually air and oil cooled). Drove about 5 car lengths and all was well again. Water pump was recently replaced....I'm wondering about a bubble in the cooling system or perhaps the temperature sensor itself. Anybody else have a similar experience??

Read the Owners Manual about oil level and adding -
If your car is overheating whilst being driven slower - I tend to think there is an air flow problem.
Be careful to not let the engine get overheated - as this may cause large amounts of undervalued currency to float from your wallet to the nearest mechanic.
FWIW- oil provides some amount of cooling - however - the 92 engine isn't designed like a 911's, as such I tend to think it is there more (or strictly) for lubrication as the water is the heat sink for the motor.

Depends how recently you replaced your water pump. you could have had a bubble of air work it's way through the system. as it passed the top of the engine on it's way to the tank you may have "steamed" the sensor thus reading a higher temp. once it cleared you were all right? The other thing to check as the post above states is your fans. were they both on? do they both go on with the A/C activated?
