Post 5-spd trans conversion

Hi.

This is my first post. Hope someone can help.
I'm embarking on the foolhearty endeavor of changing my auto '87 928 to a 5spd, and was wondering if anyone had any advice... other than selling it and buying another 928

I have the entire drivetrain from my '79 project car (abandoned when I realized it would be cheaper to buy the '87 than to restore the '79), including the clutch master mounting plate cut from a firewall.

Anyone else done this?

Thanks in advance,

Er, keep the '87 and buy a 5-speed? Some days I wished I'd kept my automatic--especially those rare occasions when I'm caught in traffic.

You might want to give Jim @ 928 International a call. He's helped a couple of fellas who tackled this project. There is more to it than meets the eye.

Something that comes to mind - you'd be installing a 5 speed that doesn't have the bullet proof Borg Warner synchros in the car if memory serves. These got changed in 84 (I think).

If you're going to go to all the effort - I'd be looking for a later model trannsmission for the 'sex change' operation.

Thanks Jay.
I'll give Jim a call. The guys @928 Intl. have been really helpful so far. I know about most of the hidden bits of the conversion from them, like the different crossmember on early 5-spds, but I'll make sure before I start. What I'm not sure of are any electrical mods needed, if any (like if the brain relies on any any feedback from the auto trans.)

And you're right about the early trans. I may have an '88 transaxle coming instead. Here's hoping...

BTW, any clutch preferences? (single or dual-disc)
