Thanks for the tip Surfridermason. Wrenching isn't a problem for me. Whenever I buy cars, I tend to deal with less complicated versions to understand them better. Then I'll move into something a notch above when I'm ready. I know the 16 valve are Beasts but a 32 valve are FIRE BREATHING BEASTS. I know they are unique sounding...actually insane sounding is the word for it LOL. There is 1 guy in my area that has an '88 S4. I saw him last year going down a street near my friend’s house, rumbling and coasting through to the stop sign, and as he turned, he saw us drooling and staring in awe so he gave us a taste of what it is to have a modern muscle car and went home. I couldn’t believe my ears. I thought that I was at Englishtown that night! Very exciting car to say the least...

Yes, the '85 US is the first year of the 32-valve engine. Hence why I recommended '85 or '86 US, since those will be the cheapest 32-valvers and also have the newer transmission.

Thanks again Dprantl. I have some searching to do I'd like a better transmission too along with the grunt. By cheapest 32 valve, anywhere from 6,500 to 10,00 usd average if they are trying to let them go LOL! It's Wheeler Dealer Time!

If I were in the market, one of these two would soon be in my garage (no affiliation):

Thanks Linderpat I was looking at the black one before...she’s sweet. I'm really looking for one that I can see and drive though with the person to person advantages...negotiating, body language, eye movements, listening to the car’s engine and watching the car’s readings in the dash, etc...I don't trust most sellers from Evilbay. Don't get me wrong here but, they (not all folks) have a tendency to exaggerate the value and condition of the cars and even used parts for that matter. Too many horror stories from buyers who have won auctions and when they saw the car, they’ve had rude awakenings that I simply cannot afford.

It seems as though you have had good fortune. Then there is hope. I'll be patient and wait for something.

Back to your question of " It's an '82 S 5 speed with a crunch in the 3rd gear synchro with 168xxx kilometers not miles which I believe could be a European variant but can anyone here tell me what else to look for to confirm this?. " The most obvious way to indentify a EURO is the 1X4" light behind or to the rear of the front wheels. Another is if it is an S model those were not available in the US till later models. I could be mistaken but I don`t think the US 85 had 290hp. More like 272, but I could be mistaken. Euro models have a higher compression ration than US models as well. However, with all that said about the Euro models there is a downside, parts are more difficult to find, but if purchased from the Big 3 be certain to inform them it is Euro, there are a fair number of parts that are different. More than one would anticipate. I`m restoring a 80S and I`ve received quite an education from both members from rennlists, the Big 3 and trial and error on my part, mostly error. Good luck with your search there are alot of 928 for sale in the US. Toofer

The US '85 32-valve model has 288HP or 292HP (some Porsche publications have differing values). They also have 302lb.ft torque @ 2,700RPM making them torque monsters. They are pretty much identical to the US '86.

Default 928S

Hey dpranti, I was wondering where you are getting the HP ratings of the 85 32 valve motor, everything I have ever read shows the 85 with 284hp. I`m not saying you are wrong, just curious. I spent alot of time reading about the history of the 928 before I bought one and I`ve not found any info that ever shows the 85 with more than 284, atleast a stock 85 with no modifications. But I do love info reguarding the 928. Would you mind sharing where your info is listed, there may be other specs I`d be interested in as well. Thx, Toofer

Saw a Guards Red w black '84 S today. Paint ok for it's year, interior seriously !@#$'d up, oil leak from right cam cover and power steering line, oil pressure bouncing between 1 and 1.5 bar while idling. Tranny a little loud ( he says they may be the carrier bearings ) but not crunchy. Upper and lower ball joints toast. Wheel bearing nuts could use some lube and retightening. Sleeping on it. Question, what should the oil pressure read at idle?
