Just to clarify:
My 'control valve' 928 110 429 07 will only hold vacuum if both of the larger ports are plugged. My understanding is that:
No vacuum: ports are closed to pass vapors
Vacuum: ports are open to pass vapors
There must be some kind of diaphragm in there. Anyone ever try to fix one of these?

this is a sealed unit,
replacement is to find another part that holds vacuum,
buying a new one for 700.00 is ridiculous,
maybe Roger knows where to find another part that costs less

Try 928 International for a healthy used one. Unfortunately, backfire through the intake is death on these parts. Fortunately, if the diaphragm holds vacuum it's all intact.

I have the same problem that mervynp has encountered. My 928.110.429.07 "Control valve" will not hold vacuum.

After scouring Rennlist about this part, this is what I have learned thus far:
This control valve is part of the fuel vapor charcoal container system and under certain conditions it pulls air through the container to purge the accumulated fumes. It will affect performance if not working properly, or if there is a vacuum leak from being disconnected.

You can still plate it if all the ports are capped off. It won't float. Mine survived re-plating just fine with some tight fitting caps over all the openings. Since the back half or body is not plated, you can mask that off by brushing on liquid paraffin and letting that harden. As long as your plating solution is around room temperature, the paraffin will prevent the body from being plated or stained by the chromate dip..

IF, and that’s an uppercase IF, you can plug all the ports and protect them from the chem clean, strip, clean, and plating solutions, you can get away with replating. It’s likely not the diaphragm that’s at risk, it’s the metal pin and the seal around it that lift the valve disk inside.
