Sharks in the Mountains May 17, 18, 2003 Info, Caravans, etc.
This thread is for SITM info, caravans, etc.

This is a trip you should make. The picnic is a blast, driving the Blue Ridge Parkway with about 75 (hopefully more) other sharks is a treat, Dave, Jeannie and Wally are a delight.
Register with Dave and Jeannie (use the link above) so they can plan for your attendance and order enough food and drink.
For those of you who doubt you can make the trip due to time restrictions or mechanical limitations of your car, I'll tell you that I left Maryland at 11PM Friday night, made the picnic Saturday and the BRP drive, then left for Maryland and was home by noon on Sunday. 1500 miles in 1 1/2 days. Car ran perfect. I needed that trip. So do you.
Still not convinced?

Communications.
If you are traveling with a FRS "talkabout" style radio, use channel 9 subchannel 28 (that makes it 9-28 clever idea from Dave and Jeannie). Have it handy on the way to SITM. If you run accross other sharks along the way, it's a easy way to make contact. Also could help if you need assistence.
If you are on the Road Help list, don't forget to take your copy of the list with you. I'll send fresh lists out the week of the event.

The 2nd annual Blue Ridge Parkway Cannonb...errr...Caravan Run down to SITM is
set to begin 5/16/03 @10:30 EST. This will begin at the top of the BRP which is
roughly the intersection of HWY 64 and the BRP (just east of Waynesboro, VA) .
As I recall there is a parking lot just before getting onto the parkway on the right
hand side. Show up with a full tank. There are only two gas stations on the BRP
between the start and SITM (Peaks of Otter at mile marker 85 and Doughton Park
at mile marker 240). 10+ Sharks are expected so far and that is just from a quick
count of the DC, PA and New England folks I've talked to. I expect some GLOC and
other midwest 928ers to "explore" the same 290 mile route of twisties, so there is a
potential of about 20 Sharks. This is just one of the highlights of SITM and it's not even an official event. :-)

If there are any folks coming up I-85 or I-26 (Atlanta or Florida) that would like to hook up on the way in, let me know. The last 2 years we've wound up driving in by ourselves. Sure would be nice to come in with a school of sharks. We're leaving the Greenville/Spartanburg area of S.C. around 1pm Friday the 16th heading north on I-85, then getting onto 221 north, just north of Spartanburg. 221 goes almost straight into Banner Elk. Scenic 2 lane most of the way, with some good twisties the closer you get to Banner Elk. Let me know if you're interested. Cheers,

Nice photos from SITM 2002, Mike! And before I go on, am I the only one who thinks the frontmost shark in the second photo (isn't that DR's car?) looks unusually feminine with the lights up?

Yeah, that one.
It looks like we'll finally be able to make it to SITM this year. I've been wanting to do this (SITH/SITM) for a few years and it looks like we're finally free of unavoidable scheduling conflicts!
A few questions:

A few questions:

- We'll be hitting the road Thursday (May 15) morning from the Kansas City area. Anyone else going that way? We're thinking about staying in Nashville Thursday night.

- Being that we got nailed by two hailstorms yesterday (no big deal compared to the folks about 10 miles to the north and about 20 miles to the south who got nailed by tornadoes yesterday), I've been wondering about taking the shark cross-country during the spring storm season. Last time I tried that, we found ourselves speeding to outrun severe weather in Nebraska. Do you guys to the east of us have so much trouble with hail, too? I guess I'll pack the car cover and a weather radio and hope for the best.

- Any recommendations for good routes for those of us traveling from flyover country? We probably can't go too scenic for too long (it's already 900+ miles each way for us taking the most direct routes), but anything especially twisty and/or unusually scenic for awhile might be nice.

- Are there any good boozatoriums (booze stores) around SITM? Need to decide whether to haul along my own supply of the good stuff (Paulaner, Hacker Pschorr, etc.) or rely on the local supply chain.

- So, is there indoor plumbing in this part of NC?

Hi Ed,

There is a small group of us, who are leaving the I-70 & St. Rt. 13 intersection, Friday the 16th, at 7 A.M.
We hope to catch another group, who said they're stopping at Charleston, W.Va.(?), and leaving there late morning, don't know if this will happen.....Kinda lost the thread to the second group. Need a cell # for anyone of that group....
Someone from Twinsburg, and another from Wooster, might be tempted to join up along I-77, south of Cambridge, Ohio.
Anyone else? Come join the fun!
