Post What the H#$@! is this?? (16v engine)

1983 928S 5-speed, 120k miles.

Directly below the center of the cross brace you can see two wires that have been spliced beck together with red barrel connectors. What is the component they connect to and should i be concerned about it?

Also, does anything else look "funky" under the hood? I've got a larger version of the same pic if you need it. I did notice that 2 of the rubber straps on the air box are missing.

TIA, I'm inspecting this car Sunday so any help is appreciated.

Hi kblair,
That looks like were the original warm up regulator was...
That electrical connection would have been connected to it.
But it seems that an adjustable WUR was fitted at some point.

Also the bolt which goes through the centre of the intake manifolds through the airfilter box seems to be missing...

If this is a US-delivered car, it will have electronic fuel injection, which doesn't use a warm-up regulator. The thing next to the object of your attention is the damper fitted to the efi cars.

The thing with the red heat shrink on the wires looks to be mounted on the water bridge; my guess is that it is a temperature sensor.

The missing bolt at the rear of the intake plenum (spider body) would hold the front extension of the air cleaner onto the air flow sensor of a K-Jet system. The Parts and Technical Reference Catalog shows that the lower part of the air cleaner for efi-equipped cars is quite different and it doesn't look as though that bolt is required. I've never taken any notice of whether the bolt (or the hole for it) was there or not when looking at one of them new-fangled efi cars. ;-)

I guess that will give me an excuse to get one of the other guys to lift their bonnet tomorrow.

Cool

The wires connect to the temperature II sensor [an important part...if it is bad the car won't run right at all.], and the bolt in question isn't found on cars with L-Jetronic or LH-Jetronic.

I couldn't see anything amiss otherwise...

It appears the drivers side air tube is broken below the strut brace. Also, the strut brace is bowed from hard cornering.

The origional temp sensor connector is 'hard wired' into the engine harness so if you do need to replace it you have either replace the entire harness or cut it and add connectors at the place he has. I've just had this done, at the same place.

It also looks as if you are missing the vac-formed plastic panel that covers the thin bay at the base of the windscreen. And the yellow oil dip stick should be in view on your photo.

The routing of the oil breather hose is a little funky too.

should look like this

The only thing i have that you dont is the WUR and CIS injection.

Also - Is it an optical illusion from the picture or is your cross brace bowed.

Whoa! Hold on there about that oil breather. KBlair is looking at an 83. Here's my 82. Looks about the same.

Also, I can't tell from your picture, but on mine you can clearly see it. I'm missing a cover for the coil on the right and a cover for the battery jump points on the left (It's a big cover not the little tiny plactic one covering the bolt). Also, (as is the same on mine) your appears to be missing a coil wire clamp: there should be one on the right belt cover. These aren't biggies, but you asked.

I also noticed that one of the bolts on the right (passenger) fender is shiny. A clear indication of body work.

Lastly, it's really dirty (that should be worth $500 off right there!

Hope this helps! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Well, I called the owner and asked him about the cross brace being bowed and possible bodywork being done to the front passenger side. He assures me that the brace is not bowed and that, as far as he knows, no bodywork has been done on the car. I'll know more once I get up there to inspect it.

Thanks far all the info guys, you make this almost easy......

Be prepared to get new boots for the intake runners and to replace the oil breather hose. Betcha if you look inside you'll see the rubber is decaying - the hose is bulgy-er than normal at the cap.

Get ready to pony up disproportionately big $ for the two missing airbox straps...

And if the crossbrace isn't as dead straight as John's, it IS bowed. This happens to, well, every 928 I've ever seen, if you're having any fun in it. Stronger replacements are available.

Cool

James, I've got the airbox strap thing covered. Not paying $60 for two rubberbands, going to use the snow chain tensioners mentioned in another thread.

Wanted a carbonfiber crossbrace anyway. If bowing of the brace is common, is this something to be worried about????

I will check both the breather hose and the intake runners.

gotta go make my list now!!!

Dunno for sure, but I'm not worried about it. So long as you don't run without it, should be no big deal.
