James, an S4 I had a look at here had moulded plastic shields around the rear wheel arch similar to the ones that are normally found under the front arches. These would stop water and road muck being thrown into the recesses under the rear quarter, which is obviously better for avoiding rust.

I'm not too familiar with S4's and so I just assumed they were standard? No old body style I have seen has had them.

Cheers

Thanks, Dave, that helps.

Maybe things are different on the models on that side of the pond, but my '83 has those panels too. They do tend to crack, so maybe that's why the old models you've seen are missing them.

Hi James,

You can get a tube of touch-up paint from the big 3. It is a lacquer base, and just a couple of ounces. You can contact Dupont or a body shop. Probably PPG as well uses a photographic analysis to match pigmentation. I had trouble getting a good surface finish with a borrowed spray gun, and 110 volt powered compressor. I am tempted to have a body shop to paint the areas that I painted over. I blended paint around the rear side window onto the old paint. I painted the nose section too.

I removed the rear side spoiler and window, grinded away rust along the bottom 2 edges, primed, painted, rubbed, polished, and blended. I bought a new seal, and used Permatex black silicone as a sealer. To those addressing this issue – rust may be more extensive than is visible under the window seal. Since I was painting the spoiler – which I do not advise – I removed the entire spoiler. There was an awful lot of rust under the rear hatch spoiler portion. The hidden attachment hardware on the side spoilers can be accessed by lifting the outside rubber edge with a putty knife.

If anyone needs further data on the process, post a response here. I only loosened the interior panel. I used tie wraps to free the seal from the cured sealant.
