Post Should I Paint Intake Manifolds?

Hi Sharks:

I have the intakes, valve covers, etc. removed. Has anyone polished or painted these magnesium aluminum alloy parts? Greg Nichols tips page has some coverage - big surprise, heh? See: http://www.nichols.nu/tips.htm

Also see: http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/intake.htm

* My paint is chipping, and revealing a dark grey metal. Does any form of polishing provide lasting results?
* Are there prep and paint procedures that are not too involved?
* What polish, prep, paint, and results experience have you had?
* Any tips would be appreciated.

You will find that the Cam Covers and Intake are pretty poor castings from a polish standpoint.

Strip the covers and intake pieces and paint them for a nice engine bay.

You may want to get in touch with 928 Metalworks ('mechanic' page here on rennlist under the members websites.

Now would be an ideal time to do this beautification mod.

Hi Ken and other Sharks:

Thanks for the previous advice. I am almost ready to paint. I looked at those great engine pictures of yours, and had second thoughts about painting valve covers or anything other than intake components. It looks like I would not be able to see the valve covers except for a small edge. It has been quite a while since I have seen the assembled engine. Can you look at yours, and determine how much benefit I would get from painting other components please?

By the way, this is my current approach:
degrease with car wash wand
aircraft stripper, at car wash twice; let dry between applications
bake at 300 degrees twice
prep with Dupont 225s at car wash
prime with high heat Tempo engine enamel primer
paint with Plasticote high heat engine enamel
paint with Tempo clear engine enamel

I am mixing brands because the local car paint store did not have a desirable engine color. Or should I not mix brands?

I am thinking about skipping the bead blast. Any comments?

Best Regards,
Thom Ross
