My car is currently in the shop getting it's brakes worked on. I received a call from them saying that they have discovered that there is a problem with the front calipers not keeping fluid where it's supposed to be and that new ones are in order. First off, has anyone ever heard of this ? Secondly, what is the best route to go if this in fact is true ? New calipers or used ones and since he said already that he may have some trouble getting some, I am thinking about buying them myself (from the big 3) and then having the shop installing them.
What are your thoughts... I am getting desperate.

No way to know about your calipers, but ..
1) 928 calipers rarely fail.
2) Both calipers very, very rarely fail at the same time.
I would be skeptical.

Go and look for yourself. If the seals are destroyed, perhaps they are toast, but usually they go a long, long time.
Seeing as you have an S4, it is a big bucks repair.

Could not find 'NEW' calipers in the 928 Int'l
catalog.
Listing $200.00 each used.
Could not find the rebuild kit either, though the kits for 78'- 81' & 82'- 86.5' list for $10.00 each.
I'm sure Wally, or other Big 3 affiliates would be happy to price this out on a private post.
I know you have owned the sHARk for awhile, if you haven't personally butchered the brakes doing a brake pad change, had a brake press. warn on the dash with master caution, weren't leaking fluid, ... .
I'd be suspicious of the wrench - even pros have a bad day - who might want to lay a delay or unseen costs on the parts failing.
I'd go to the shop and ask for a look see. Everything else would be a unfounded WAG on our part. He 'might' have blown the seals out and ripped them trying a re-install
What were the symptoms that precipitated the shop visit?
If you go with used ones ask if they have 'paired sets'.
good luck.

I agree with Wally, it does sound fishy. If you do determine they are "bad", you should consider some options to new calipers from your mechanic:
Rebuild them or have then professionally reconditioned. Prospeed Motorsport offer individual parts as well as a reconditioning service. I have no experience with them, but they seem reputable.
You may be able to find some used calipers from the Big 3. Excellence magazine did an article on upgrading a 944 to S4 front brakes. They bought used ones from PartsHeaven.
Finally, consider upgrading to GTS or Big Reds. I know that 928 Specialists offer kits. This option may not be much more expensive than letting your mechanic source new S4 calipers.
Good luck and let us know what happens!
