Transaxle Fill Plug Stuck
I'm wanting to change the transaxle (diff) fluid but both the filler and drain plugs are stuck. It's to the point that the plugs are getting thrashed from torque stress. If I continue, I'm going to have stripped plugs.
Ive tried penetrating fluid and an extended torque bar but still, nothing.
Any Ideas Anyone?.
Thanks

1) Buy two new plugs and a differential cover gasket.
2) Remove the rear cover from the differential.
3) Remove the plugs without damaging the threads in the cover.
4) Clean and replace the cover.
5) Replace the drain plug to the proper torque spec (16 lb/ft).
6) Fill using a pump or a long funnel thru the battery box or from the side of the car thru the wheel well.
7) Replace the fill plug to the proper torque spec (16 lb/ft).
8) Check for leaks over the next few weeks.

Thank You Wally. FYI - I called a "Porsche Shop" in the area and they said - "most likely" we'll have to weld a bar onto the plug(s) for removal. They also went on to say that these plugs are "known" to stick.
I like your advice alot better - Thanks Again

Drew,
I had the same problem. The solution was to use both an allen-head and an air chisel at the same time. The combination was enough to get the plug loose. It does destroy the plug so you'll need replacemnts.

Question.
I'm attempting to remove the fill plug, I have a small leak, and I figure it about time I make sure I have enough fluid. I know I do, but it'll help me sleep better at night.
Did you try to remove the plug with the trans at opperating tempeture? I noticed that the mannual suggests that you do it that way. I know aluminum and steel have very diffren heat expansion rates. If the plug was put in with the transmittion warm, you'll never get it out cold, at least I can't.
I haven't tryed it hot yet, I hate working on a hot car. Did you try it, if so, how did it go?
Thanks.

Probably goes without saying but... always remove the fill plug before the drain plug, just in case you can't get the fill plug off. You can drive it with bitched up plugs but you can't without diff oil.
Cool, glad you got it to work.
Thanks.
Before I think too hard about that, I'm going to see if getting the aluminim hot will fix me up. It can't hurt, thats for sure.
I'm going to cross my fingers and hope.
Thanks though.
