Post Autocross event at Ripken Stadium Sunday 15th

Eric D., John K., others in the Baltimore DC area- come to Aberdeen Sunday and have a ball. They even have loaner helmets available.

I'll be running and there will be a ton of P-cars including a pepper participating. It would be great to see some other sharks on the course.

Would love to be there but...

I plan to spend the day sailing with my father.

Greg,
I would love to be there too...but I'm afraid to "smoke" the crowd and cause other 928s to disqualify!

Now I'm starting to think we should have an autocross event at one of 928 events. (do you think we can convince NC State Government to pave that park for our autcrossing pleasure?)

Would be an opportunity for autocross-shy people (such as myself) to try it for the first time, within a supportive community

Now tell us, do you have in-car video footage from the last autocross you participated in?

Tarek, I thought I saw the NC State airplane seeding clouds to produce the nasty rain we had at SITM. I doubt they would embrace a 928 autocross event

I have not run in-car video at autocross yet. I wanted to compete a couple of times to get a feel for the g-forces and such before designing a system which would not get damaged, or break loose and damage me! Now that I have run a couple of events, I'm ready to put something together for next time.

The Ripken event was today. It was such a blast! There was another 928 running. A 86.5 5 speed.

The Cayenne which ran was impressive. There were 80 participants, probably 60 P-cars and 20 "guests". They ran two cars staggered on the course so things ran quickly and smoothly.

There is so much positive energy at the PCA Chasapeake autocross events. Helpful tips, "thumbs up" kinda stuff, Hey, they even treated a 928 owner (me) like a real Porsche guy.

I'm a newbie, but my times are improving and the advice I get is valuable. I can't wait until the next autocross.

Greg -

Glad someone besides me has the 'fever'!!

I STILL say - AX is the most fun you can have with your clothes on!!

How are your times - as compared to some of the others?

Also - Check into the local SCCA. http://www.wdcr-scca.org/ This is the Wash DC region - I am guessing it is yours. Most all the SCCA's have MONTHLY AX and also regular "Driving Education" (Which is MORE fun then an AX!)

Our local SCCA AX is next Sunday - DRIVE ON DOWN!

Hi Mark,

I have a SCCA membership application on my desk at the office. I plan on joining SCCA.

My times are roughly in the middle of the pack. To give you an idea, If memory serves, the lowest (swift SE-3) was 41. 42 was put up by a 996 TT. For the most part, everyone else was running 44-60. I had a 52.

The 928 is a heavy car for AutoX. My automatic has a first gear start mod which makes for an interesting shift situation. If you start with the selector in 2, the car is in first. It will not shift to second unless you select 3. Then you have to select 2 again to hold second, otherwise, the car will shift to third with the selector in 3. I need to fine-tume the kickdown to first after the car shifts to second. The car tends to bog in second and not want to go back to first in certain speed/load configurations. I find it bogging in second coming out of a turn at 25 or 30 mph. I need first at that point. I'll talk to Steve C about this, I'm thinking a bit more tension on the TV cable is in order. I may add a remote kickdown switch but I would rather not do that. If I force first at the wrong time with the remote switch, I could hurt the engine. Don't want to do that.

No matter what I do to the car, It's probably always going to feel like a sled compared to the 944 turbos, Boxsters and 914 super AutoX'ers I see run. Oh well, Im learnig how to drive my car better. It's all good.

Greg -

Doublecheck that "2" on the AT. The way it is supposed to work - it will hold it in 1st until around 5500-5700 RPM....Beth and I both do the same - put it in "2"...let it wind out in 1st and shift to 2nd...

Mark,

I have a modified valve body with first gear start. It's different than a stock AT valve body.

As you decsribed what you and Beth do, how do you get kickdown back to first, once the trans has shifted to second? WOT kickdown switch? and at what max speed?

Hi Greg

Glad you had fun. The sailing sucked (no wind) but good times with Dad anyway. I will try to be at the next one in July.

On my OB with the 3sp auto, first gear is first gear. I launched in 1st, then shifted to 2 and left it until the end of the run.

My tripod rig was very stable for backroad flinging, but i have yet to try it on an AX. I'll give it a go unless the tech guy says no.

Hi John,

July 13th event at Ripken Stadium. I'll be there.

At the Cumberland event, I saw a video rig made out of wood. It went over the passenger seat back and was firmly strapped to the seat. It passed tech, which suprized me, unless it was an "insider's" car.

I use 1" mini camera units. I can use the driver or passenger visor to secure the camera. My concern is the recorder being safely secured. I have a couple of ideas in that regard. I'll have it sorted out by the July event.

Hope to see you there.

Greg
