Electrical and Heat
I was up at the Tweeks Funfest this past weekend and I had two problems. The first was a heat problem. When the car was sitting still it would get extremely hot and the central warning light would come on. Then when the car was moving the gauge went back to its normal position.
The second problem occurred on the way home when I stopped to get some lunch. The shark was off for maybe 20 minutes, when I got ready to start it, it wouldn't even crank. The battery is only a month old, but I don't know about the alternator. I got the car jumped and got it home. I then went out about a three hours later and the car started right up.
Any ideas about these problems would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Brian

The heating problem is probably a bad viscous fan clutch.
The starting problem is a bad starter. the excess heat is affecting it. Once the engine cools down enough, the starter will work. YMMV.

It's a starter problem? It started right up when the battery was jumped.
I thought it might be the alternator. When I run the car the needle is on 12, but when I turn on the fog lights or the headlights, it drops down between 12 and 10.
Thank you all for your help.

Hai,
I hads the same problem with my 928. Two possible fixes: Replace engine ground strap and connections to starter, or install a boost relay to starter. Replacing the starter should be a last alternative.

Brian,
See Greg Nichol's site about replacing fan clutch silicon fluid: http://www.nichols.nu/tips.htm
Get fluid from Toyota dealer. Part # 08816-03001. Use heat gun. Gently pry off the strip that holds in plug from the middle. Takes some time. Do it while you watch a movie. This site has some other posts on subject. Seach archives. I have replenished clutch fluid and replaced starter. Thanks to snowball for specifying part # in recent post. Hope This Helps!

I just want to make sure we are talking about the right fan. The one that isn't working is the one on the front of the car directly behind the bumper. I just wanted to be sure because in the last link he decided to check out the timing belt since there was easy access to it. I'm sorry but I'm new to all this.
Thanks,
Brian

Snowball, sorry for being so ignorant on this, but does the clutch make the fan spin faster? It spins when I start the car cold. I'm sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to understand. From a cold start, it took maybe 5 minutes before it was ready to overheat. I do have the manuals on the way to me.
Thanks,
Brian

If your engine's temperature is in the normal range while the car is in motion, but goes up when the car is stationary, then the problem is most likely the fan clutch. It is not spinning as fast as the belt that is turning the pulley to which it is attached.
Either refill the clutch with viscous fluid (which can be purchased from Toyota) or replace the fan clutch.

Help!!!
I just installed the fan clutch and the car still overheated. I never heard the clutch engage so could I have just received a bad clutch or is there something else?
Thanks,
