Question Null headlight condition...

Both headlights decided to quit working.
Not the fuses, replaced them any way.
I'm assuming since I can't find a headlight relay-other than for the headlight motor- that if the bulbs are 'good', and I have no power to the light that the ignition switch wiggle is in order then a trace to the fuse board.
Any other ideas after that?
TIA

According to my current flow diagrams, there is a headlight relay on an 82. It is XIX-XX. It shows connection to the headlights as well as the motor on my diagrams.

On the same diagram I see Fuse 19 which feeds the relay. If the headlight motor still works, then fuse 19 is ok.

Seeing as both stopped together the other obvious upstream thing is the light switch.

After that you are into the ignition/starter switch.

Is the headlight motor still working?

Marc,
Thanks.
Headlight motor is fine.
ERK...!
Hand me the reedin' glasses, Ma!
I was looking right at the Relay Function table in the owners manual and missed the XIX + XX relay.
You wouldn't by chance know if the values are the same as the I + II double relay for the rear screen heater would you?
I think Wally mentioned on a reply that they weren't interchangeable, but I might be mistaken.
Hmmm... I'll wiggle the switch connectors (ignition switch connection is tight).
There is a significant liability having the ability to palm two basketballs and go jogging...
like getting to connectors behind the pod.
So, correct me if I am wrong here.
Ignition switch -on- feeds the light switch -for headlight motor and headlamps, though not needed for parking/marker lights. Light switch splits somewhere to fuse #19 headlight motor, relay xix+xx, and fuses # 24 & # 25 left and right main beam, respectively. Do fuses come before or after relay? I suspect after.
Thanks again.
What color is your paint?
My Weissach is Hellbronze which changes color with 'the light' from a grey silver/pewter to a glowing soft gold with your observable color along the way, just curious, as I have seen a silver metallic take on the light and look like a gold also.

John,

Do you have the shop manuals or anything resembling them?

That answers my question.... If you had nothing, I was going to send you my CD (backup to paper manuals that I own).

Keep firing away....

Thanks for the offer.
I'm going to upload MS XP and see if I can manipulate it in a somewhat better/quicker fashion.
Thanks again.

Close.

Ignition switch feeds light switch (black/red wire) and other stuff

Light switch connects to headlight relay (brown/red wire)

Fuse 19 appears to protect the headlight motor and is before the relay.

Fuses 24, 26 (Left) and 25, 27 (right) protect the headlights and come after the relay.

The single point of failure taking out both headlights and leaving the motor intact is a pretty good clue. That would mean fuse 19 is ok and that you are getting power to the relay switch actuators. This also means the headlight switch is working. There is a second unfused link from the same power buss (30) that enters the relay and powers the lights when the relays engage.

My guess is that the relay isn't switching the lights on when you tell it to. It appears to have the power and the control signal it needs. You may try popping the top off the relay and hitting it with contact cleaner, but there is some solid state stuff in there that may be fried. It does not look interchangable with the rear window defogger.

On the color, I think it is Brown Copper Metallic (443) or Tobacco Metallic (464). I just ordered the kardex as all the code labels are gone.
