Post Euro side marker lights

I have a "gray market" 78 Euro 928 that I love. One problem, the surface-mounted side amrker lights that were bolted on to federalize the vehicle look like crap. Strictly 70's. I'm looking for a more modern surface-mounted replacement... approx 1.5" high and 4" long. Anybody know where I can get them or has anybody else updated their Euro side marker lights?

Carl,

I was lucky. The person who did the conversion used Porsche factory lighting.

I'm just hypothesizing here, but couldn't "someone" potentially just "remove" the added lights and "fill" the hole to look as if it "had never been there"? After all, new BMW's just have the one behind the wheel arch.

Cool

Flint-

A cheap way to disguise the lights is to paint them body color. I did this on my black 928 and they are virtually invisible. This works until I can get it painted and the holes filled-

Question

Jim,

You may be just the person who can help me out with a little 'challenge':
On my '93 GTS, I have both the US side-markers (in front of the wheels) and turn signals (behind the front wheels). BUT - my turn signals are almost square (approx. 1" x 1.5"). I've noticed that all 928's here in Europe have the rectangular turn signal as described by Carl.
(I suspect that my car was imported from either Canada or the US and then fitted with turn signals to pass European inspection.)

My question to you is this: How are the turn signals on your car (Euros) fastened to the fender - ie. size and shape of hole(s)??

My current small indicators are VW-style and quite ugly to look at <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> , so I'm wondering what modifications it may take to install the 'original' rectangular Porsche units...

Any input is greatly appreciated

Are the lights behind the front wheels supposed to act like turn signals as well? Just wondering since I have noticed the new BMWs do that but my 84 928 does not.

Thumbs up

Aaron,

As far as I have understood, the cars sold in Europe did not come with the side marker lights (placed in front of the wheels).
However, they were equipped with the rectangular light placed behind the front wheels (as on your car?) - and yes, they're used as turn signals (at least in Europe).

As to whether or not they are used for this purpose in the US, I do not know.

Maybe someone else can enlighten us on this?!

Dave,

Forgeline, forged and polished aluminum wheels.

Mike,

I don't have my car at my house because it's 200 miles away having the engine modified and an Electromotive engine management system installed.

Here goes, I think it is held on by two screws through the aluminum fenders and I'm not sure on the size of the hole for the light bulb. However, the fender is stamped with a recess for the lights.

Aaron,

Yes, the side markers behind the front wheels are turn singnal indicators and all European spec cars have them.

On my euro, the flush-mounted factory l;ights behind the fron wheels are turn signals only, not running lights. The surface-mounted crappy looking side-marker lights were bolted on in front of the wheelwell. The have 2 screw holes and a 3/4 dia hole for the wireing nipple. I'd love to "fill them in", but the paint job is a few years off yet (spending all me $$ on mechanicals). Anybody know of some sexy looking aftermarket sidemarker lights that are about the right size?

Mine act as just running lights, are they supposed to act as those and be turn signals or are they just supposed to be turn signals? I have no other side markers on the front of the car and in the rear I have one red one per side that I am considering having removed and filled when I get the car repainted.
