Default Rear Seat Delete Progress pics!!!

Well it's been over a year since my last post on my rear seat delete. In the previous one I pretty much got lambasted for what I'll admit was a pretty half hearted attempt.

Well, now I'm 90% done with the project and I wanted to post my progress.

So let me know what you think. (Go ahead, I can take it.)

My plan is to carpet the section shown in black, to cover the 10" subwoofer behind the driver and the amp behind the passenger seat, hopefully by next week. First I have to learn how to work a sewing machine and put on the binding.

Thanks for viewing and for any comments.

Stay tuned for more...

Hi Mike,

I guess I don't understand what I'm seeing. What is above the sub? Is that a storage compartment? Why not leave the rear floor flat? With that curved section above the sub I would think it will limit the recline of the seats. When I haul lumber or long stuff I often completly recline the passenger seat to give me more room and avoid damaging the seat. What are you going to do with the rear consol? What's in the space where the seats used to be?

Take the carpet and binding to any upholstry shop or even a tailor and for very little $ they will do a professional job. When I did my carpet a tailor sewed on the rubber foot rest panel to the carpet for $10.00. I would think the binding would be even easier. When I did the rear seat delete I wrapped all the carpeting around the edges so no binding needed.

I would also suggest a grill for the sub. Those things can get damaged very easily. I used a cheap grill from Circuit City, but then Sterling used a wheel center. Maybe somthing inbetween.

Thanks everyone,

Thanks for the compliment Jason!

Sterling, I know I should have waited, pay no attention to anything below the carpet . I have started practicing with the binding. It's tricky but I think I can do it.

Jim M.,
I do plan to wrap the carpet around the edges, but at the floor there's an area where it would normally have binding (to match the factory carpet) and that's where I want to put it in.

There's no storage back there, the only thing inside the built in area (which is pretty small) is the amp on the PS and the sub on the DS. The back part is hinged and flips up to reveal access to the amp adjustment dials at the top and where I plan to put in some small cubbies or trays to hold small stuff like some relays, fuses, Kempf tool, maybe a meter you know, small stuff.

I know the local upholstery guy would probably be able to do it (he hooked me up with the hog rings for the seats and the binding I needed) but a) I want to do it myself and b) he's WAY busy with boat upholstery right now and the backlog is several weeks. A job this small wouldn't come to the top for a while.

Thanks for the tip on the speaker grille. I did get one from Circuit city but didn't like it, I'll look around for something else.

Also, the seats recline WAY back without hitting the top of that, but I did put the return in there for a reason. I wanted to give the impression of a true two-seater and I think it does that rather than just open up lots of cargo space in the back.

Andrew, How about a big 'ol 22" spinner on there?

Looks good. I really like the clean look in the rear. I too am going to deck mine up with all the amps etc. under. (not to bee seen)

Here is a pic of a sub cover I found on ebay its very sturdy and rattle free. Here is a link to a 10" one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Speaker-Grills-F....c57.m20.l1116

Is the carpet silverknit? And if so do you like the quality and where did you buy it?

Thanks and please give us finished pics

David,

Wow, that's a lot of stuff in the back of yours. You're planning to hide all of that, eh?

Yes the carpet is sliverknit. The color is silver grey or marble grey. It's a GAHH carpet from Rob Budd. I really like the quality and it's easy to work with. Just take the advice I read on here about working with it. Use LOTS of rubber gloves. This way you don't get anything on the carpet face during install. I just did the whole car and it's a HUGE difference.
