Post Mystery Items in Spare Tire Compartment

I'm cleaning out the spare tire compartment and need some help identifying some items which can be seen below. I'd like to know their purpose and correct location.

The first item is the waded up felt fabric which is smashed flat against the front wall. It is partially trapped by the battery door preventing a good seal. It also seems to be glued down in certain areas.

Second are the 3 rubber blocks which were under the spare. They are about 4mm thick and have a hole in them.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Scott,

That felt is your jack bag.
The foam pieces are for protecting the spare tire I think????

I know I'm right on the first one though and no, it is not glued down, just stuck. Rip that sucker outta there and put your jack in it.

Hey - Post number 300

Hi Scott,

The felt bag normally contains the jack. It is then left inside the rim of the inflatable spare. The pads keep the spare's rim from touching the sheet metal beneath.

The felt is definately not for the jack. I found the jack in it's felt bag tucked in behind the tool kit beside the right tail light.

This felt is a single flat sheet roughly in the shape of a triangle. Maybe it doesn't belong there at all? It's been there for some time though.

You're probably right on the rubber blocks. Most likely they've shifted a bit over the last 15 years.

How the heck does the jack fit in behind the toolkit?????
Can it really slide in there?
The only thing I could squeeze in there on my 85 was a first aid kit.

I would have bet money that that was a jack bag. Tells you how much I know.

Could it be a liner to go inside the spare?

No question on the little rubber blocks. They were/are for the spare to sit on.... anti-rattle devices I'd say. In my '86 that little felt triangle is firmly glued to the outside (left/port) side of the spare-tire well, right where the rubber meets the sheet-metal. About 30% of it flops over the top of the tire once the tire is in the well. Perhaps an anti-friction device for the rubber.

And the jack, in it's bag slips nicely behind the rear "tool-panel" just to the right (starboard) side of/and behind the center pillar on which the hatch-release mechanism is mounted.

Happy New Year, all!!

Hi Scott,

Hmmm,… My car was missing some things back there upon purchase. I knew I had seen the jack stored inside the spare somewhere. So, I looked up spare in the owner’s manual. Page 77 has a picture. It shows the jack stored in the felt bag in the spare. There is a compressor, and a bottle in there too.

Spit fire and save the matches!

Guess what is laid forward from about 11 o’clock to 1 o’clock? Give up? A piece of that same sort of felt! It looks like the felt would fold back over the spare to at least its midpoint. How is it connected at the bottom edge?

BTW there is no substitute for the owner’s manual.

BrianG:

Can you post a picture of how that looks on your car? Many of us have that felt piece loose, and it would be interesting to see how it was positioned originally.

Thanks!

Thom,

You're right, my owners manual has a nice picture of the felt pulled back as well as the jack and compressor insdie the spare. Interestingly, the compressor looks different to the ones I've seen. Mine is missing, so I'm not certain what it should look like. No picture of the rubber bumpers though. I'll check the service manual.

Here's a picture of the bottom of the felt. It's glued to the floor. It aggravates me that the felt goes under the battery door but it's probably not a big deal.

If you'd like more exact information on the attachment, let me know what you need.

Thanks for everyone's input.

We have discussed this before. But I have my jack in bag and lug wrench behind the tool kit. I know I have seen pictures of it beside the spare tire, but....

Question

There is also suppose to be a big plastic bag to put your bad tire in when you use the inflatable spare. Where would that be?

Gordon,

I found a clear piece of plastic under the cargo area carpet. It's a single sheet not a bag and, when unfolded, is about 27" x 27". I don't think mine has ever been unfolded.

I guess you're just supposed to lay the tire on top of it.

I believe the felt is to keep the plastic tire cover from sqeeking against the spare.
As for the plastic stuff here's what I pulled from a wreck '83 Euro I parted:
A plastic bag containing a plastic bag to put the dirty flat tire in, a plastic sheet which a assume is for kneeling on, a plastic rain poncho,
a pair of plastic gloves, a foil packaged wipe that is used to lubricate the antenna and one other item I can't recall (I'll post if I remember).
Also in the car was the reflective fold up safty triangle and the orig. German edition first aid kit.
I no longer have these items as I gave them to a fellow 928er with a very low mile '79 who was missing them.

That felt piece is for noise suppression, and to cushion the OEM lugnut wrench. There should be three rubber pads on top of the battery-box cover and the area next to it to keep the spare from rattling.

Lastly, the jack (in its pouch) fits behind the tool kit. In my case, I also have a ratcheting torque wrench along side of it. YMMV.

BTW, YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary. However, other acceptable versions include "Your Money May Vary", "You Make Me Vommit", "You're My Main Vermin", and "Your Mother May Vetch".

Regarding the jack issue - i believe the type of jack changed with the S4.

My jack is about 13" long, and would not fit behind the tool kit.
