Default Mystery wire in battery cabinet

Please note this photo. 84 5-speed US.

This wiring plug is a mystery. Two of the wires are junctioned. The grey/brown one simply terminates at the plug. Is this a vestigial wiring portion that would have been used in a Euro version of the car?

Our car had a rear end fire years ago (with a PO) that necessitated some rewiring. I'm trying to figure out if this wiring is legit or jerry-rigged.

Thanks.
