For some reason, I have an affection for '86.5 MY. I just wonder how you keep your front spoiler in such great shape? I'm on my second spoiler in 6 years and it is wired together at the moment.

In response to some of your questions or comments:

Yes the people of Newfoundland are incredible. They have a unique perspective on life and they were incredibly welcoming. They’d open (or rather close) their roads for us, make us sometime wonderful always interesting meals, and line the streets to cheer us on.
Some of the towns receive double, triple, or more of their population. It’s really rewarding to meet the kids in small remote towns, I’d let them climb into the driver seat of my car, sometime I’d close the door and let them hang out in there with their friends, etc, they loved it.

As for response to my 928, I must say first of all that the people who participate in the Targa are absolutely wonderful. There’s a camaraderie that exists no where else in motor sport, and there’s an incredible variety of cars. That said I’ve found there are people who understand or are open to understanding the 928 and those who are not. I don’t spend much time explaining myself to the latter. By the end I know it was obvious to my BMW owning/loving co-driver that the 928 is an excellent tool for the Targa.

As for preparing my car I really just did basic maintenance. The Targa provides a check list of items/requirements, and the car is scrutinized on registration day. Check out the Targa site for the list if you’re interested, mostly things like for example, two properly mounted 5 LBS fire extinguishers, etc.

My car has been well maintained, I did the timing belt about 10000KM ago, change ALL fluids regularly, etc. For the Targa I replaced the following (probably forgetting a few things):
  • CV boots
  • Complete brake job
  • Front control arm (had a crack)
  • Wheel bearings
  • Fixed oil leak (oil pan gasket, etc)
  • Four new Yokohama AVS ES100 (255s on the back)
  • Acquired and mounted a full size spare
  • ..Tons of tweaking that seemed to go on all summer prior to the Targa, to much to list

Things I wanted to do but could not:
  • New shocks
  • Same size tires on all four corners
  • Two full size spares
  • Skid plates

I watched the recap on Speed this morning, looked like a lot of fun and you got just a couple seconds of TV time! At one point the host was doing the recap at the evening's service area and was standing right in front of your car while talking. "Honey! Look! A 928 running the targa!"
