If the rubber bumpers underneath the hatch are too tense, my hatch doesn't release either. I have to make a compromise between some rattles and the hatch release working. Some day I'll figure out how to get both right at the same time...

There's a fix here:

I've done it and it works.

I thought I would post my findings under this thread.
I too was having a problem getting the rear hatch to release when using the hatch release ****. I took off the tool cover and could see the motor working as it raised and lowered the vertical release arm, but the hatch would just not pop open. I have read more than several “fixes” for this problem; all of which did not help in this instance. I tried to lower the motor, as the workshop manuals suggest, and I thought it was strange that I did not feel much resistance. With the motor lowered all of the way down, the hatch would still not pop open, although it did make some clicking noises from contact with the upper “tongue” part. I took the entire latch, catch, tongue, and motor assembly apart to clean and examine it. Every thing was in excellent condition except the part on the hatch lid itself. The “tongue” housing had a hairline stress fracture in it, but I couldn’t see how this would cause the problem of not releasing. After putting the entire assembly back together again as perfectly as I could, it still would not pop the hatch. I noticed how the carpet surrounding the rectangular receiving latch is mashed underneath it all the way around. I thought maybe the carpet was soft enough, although mashed, to cause the receiving latch to be slightly tilted back in such a way as to not allow the upper “tongue” part to release. I took two small pieces of metal not more than a millimeter thick and shimmed the back side of the receiving latch to bring it up a tad. VOILA! …..no more hatch release problem.
