The steering in my 81 started making a groaning noise. It seems to be the worst when the car is cold. Anybody have experience with this in the 928? My gut tells me it is the pump, but could it be the steering rack?

I have had this in other cars too. It was caused by low on oil, or the reservoir to pump pipe was obstructed. On my Disco, the jack vibrated up on to the hose, and flattened it - loud groaning noises. Check your hoses for kinks, leaks, collapsed, and finally, delaminated internally, blocking flow.

Did you figure it out? I started having the same problem last week, also only when motor was cold. By cold, I mean 65 - 70 degrees, here in Orlando, FL...in February.
Thanks

It is still doing it.....I did add some fluid to the system, since it was low. It also make a noise on right hand corners at a certain RPM. You can actually feel it through the wheel on an on ramp. I don't know, but my gut tells me it is the pump. I sure hope it isn't the rack!

John,
If you have a lack of assist with turning when the weather is cold, but your steering feels fine when it’s hot, and your belt tension and fluid level is right, it is the rack.
Good Luck,
