Post Corba story

No I didn't race one or nothing like that. But my Nieghbor let me drive his New A/C Cobra. Dude that massive 535 Hp is just plain outrageous.
Now for the report. It's loud and rides worse than my Auto cross 914. HEAVY clutch, weak brakes think he needs new ones.
No I couldn't take him with my 78 5 speed. But as you all know THERE IS NO SUBSTUTUE!! I will have to give him a "super sonic vault ride" and see what we knew all along.

A/C Cobra. made in South Africa. The engine was a Ford Motor Sport 460 with an advertised 535 HP.
All fiberglass body panels. knock off wheels. Think he needed an alignment and tire balance.
Yes accidentally broke the thing lose idling in 2nd gear just pushed the throttle down a little bit.

Actually, AC cars in England is back in production of "official" cobras, as in not kits. They have one or two that sound really hot, but if I were dropping that much money on what is basically an good-ol British car... well that's another thread topic.

Cobra kit cars in South Africa are big business. From what I understand SA's Cobra's are supposed to be 'market leaders' and are exported all over the world. I can believe that - they're a dime a dozen over here.

Here's my Cobra story - A bunch of guys from the UK raced their historics against the local guys here in early Feb. There were over 30 entries with cars like Chevrons, a DB5, Porsche 910, Ferrari P365, Gt40, Lolas, Cobras, D-type Jags, McClaren Can Ams, Mustangs, Alfa T33 and some Gt Joniors etc... Hell they even had an early 250 GTO and a LM there! It was called the David Piper Invitational and it was most impressive to see all those cars in the same races. They had two 10 lap heats in the morning and a 3Hour endurance race in the afternoon. What impressed most was that these old cars were able to run lap after lap after lap and there were very few DNF's. They raced at a new track called `Zwartkops' www.zwartkops.co.za and their times were consistent around 1min 19" Leaders, 21's Midfield and 25's Backmarkers. (scroll down to the bottom of the Zwartkops homepage for pic of the competitors)

Here comes the interesting bit - Compare their laptimes to 1'18"s I lapped with the Bully in road trim in various time trials around Zwartkops. So, hypothetically I would be quickest if I had raced the Bully against those cars but I seriously doubt the Bully would last a 3Hour enduro. (By the way, the quickest local Porsche in time trials is Rob Hulme in his road-legal tweaked GT2. He does 1'08"point something around there.)

Anyway, I spoke with a few of the local and UK Cobra guys and they all told me there's no way a Cobra would get anywhere near 1'18". They all lapped in the 21's. Surpisingly, Cobra kit cars weigh aprox 1500kg due to thick fibreglass panels and, not surprisingly, their handling sucks. As for straight line speed I've also picked up dices here and there on the road and as always, when I hook third they're history. Add a few corners here and there and you have ancient history.

Oh and by the way, the Mustangs came stone last in all the races. They seemed to be well-sorted race cars from the sixties but they were no match for the other cars of the same era.

The moral of the story is a stock road-going 928 would probably run midfield amongst full-on GT race cars of the 60's and early 70's, including genuine Cobras and kit car Cobras. Impressive for 928's and for the old race cars, depending on how you look at it.

Thought you may find that interesting...

Cool

In my experience with Cobra replicas, 1500kg (3300lbs) would have to have about 400+ kg (880lbs)in the trunk. A good replica (more like an exact copy) built by Kirkham here in Utah has an aluminum body and goes about 1000kg (2200lbs) with a steel block 427. It is true that origional Cobra's didn't handle very well but when you mix 2200 lbs with up to 650 horsepower, nothing would touch it on the straights. I have a modified 86.5 928 and I wouldn't even think of going up against a real cobra. Some of the replicas use Ford Mustang running gear, 302, 5-speed, solid rear axle, etc. Those are for looks only in my opinion. They are faster than a mustang simply because of weight reduction. They do handle well because they are better balanced with a small block up front but would in no way compare with an origional big block Cobra. With today's tire technology and an aluminum 427 in the nose, there is still not much that will touch a Cobra. They put Ferrari out of racing in the 60's and have one of the best winning records in the history of automobiles. You may be able to turn some corners faster than one but I don't believe for a second that you could touch one in an extended race. That is the only car I have driven that actually scared the sh*t out of me on acceleration. I have owned 10 second drag racers, been crew chief on Formula Atlantic's, and am currently involved in prepping my 928 for open road racing. There is still only one car that has done that to me, I will own one someday. This is a long way of saying don't bet your pink slip if you like your car!
