Post No Kickdown

I dont seem to have any kickdown. Looked through the wirings books - a direct lead from A7 to switch to box appears in 82, and in 83 it seems a relay comes in to the picture, # IX. I dont have a relay at IX, but I do have a bridge there, looks like factory.
Time to get the meter out? Cant see a fuse in there anywhere?
TIA,

According to the wiring diagram for your YMM A-5/fuse #11 is the feed wire for this circuit. The diagram shows you should have a kick down rely at IX. That relay has a solid-state circuit. The relay is also called the speed relay. It turns off the fuel pump relay if you over speed the engine in the kick down mode. Do not install any relay in the circuit, you need to order the right one for your year, make and model. For more information on the speed relay search the archives.

If you still want to check the integrity of the circuit. Jump pins # 30 and 87A for the kick down relay in the central board. Start with the solenoid switch under the gas pedal. Key on, you should have 12 volts at the feed wire (black wire A/5 feed). If it isn’t 12 volts check the wire or fuse. If you have 12 volts, passenger side of car, front of trans, you will find the kick down solenoid. It is square with a bolt going through the center. It has a gray wire with a brown tracer. Have someone depress the solenoid switch under the gas pedal. You should have 12 volts at the feed wire plus you should hear a click from the solenoid. 12 volts at the wire and no click means the solenoid is bad. No 12 volts at the wire then check the wire for a break or lose connection.

Good luck

I had to make some adjustments to the gas pedal linkage, because it would not press the switch down enough. You might want to start by checking, if your switch even gets pushed in when you push the gas paedal in all the way.

Wally P replied directly to me - Thanks again Wally.
My mistake - feed is from A5, so time for meter, and chasing down. Hope its not the solenoid, something simpler would be good. So far batting well in that area - Cruise just needed vacuum and reconnect and so on.
Thanks guys,
jp
