I went down to my local Autozone -

They tested both my battery and alternator -

Test Results -

Battery - Good
Alternator - BAD DIODE

Looks like I need to find a Refurbished/New Alternator.

I did inquire with them and they have 5 Types available (Special Order Only) and depending on which alternator came as OEM.

Beck/Arnle
90 Amp - 195.10 w/60.00 Core - 1 yr warranty
for 928s w Paris-Rhone Alternator as OEM
80 Amp - 222.98 w/85.00 Core - 1 yr warranty
for 928s W S.E.V Marchal Alternator as OEM
75 Amp - 179.91 w/25.00 Core - 1 yr warranty
for 928s w Bosch Alternator as OEM

Duralast
90 Amp - 200.99 w/50.00 Core - Life Warranty
for 928s w Paris Rhone Alternator as OEM
90 Amp - 149.99 w/45.00 Core - Life warranty
for 928s w Bosch Alternator as OEM

What would it matter which alternator came as OEM?

Thanks Again

Hey Drew...go to <a href="http://autoexpress.safeshopper.com/688/cat688.htm?75" target="_blank">this web site</a>. I'm a customer and very happy with the reman product, the quick service and the price. (no other interest in the company)

Or, you could just replace the voltage regulator.

Maybe not so, guy.

The Paris-Rhone has diodes separate from the regulator.

Damn - Just when I thought I was in the clear!

BTW - Mr Anonymous O&N - I didn't catch your definition of what a Bar meant - Thank You. I'm a little slow at times.

After doing a physical inspection of the alternator, I was unable to determine the manufacturer.

I guess I shouldn't <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" /> about it, so I might as well have a <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" /> , maybe with a <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" /> ,then go to <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" /> . Tomorrowa another day.

I'll <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" /> the outcome tomorrow.

Thanks again Everyone <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

Drew,

Do yourself and the followers of this thread a favor and take the advice that has been given to you on multiple occasions. Accurately measure your voltage using an accurate voltmeter and post it (engine off, engine running under low electrical load, engine running under full electrical load).
I would not buy a new alt based solely on Autozone's advice.

Cool

Beck Arnley vs Duralast alternators?

OK....I thought our alternators came from Bosch and Marchal.

-VW's use quite a few Bosch alternators, and the main difference is the mounting points. I think I red on here some place that someone found an Audi alternator that fits at a lower price.

-And I'll look for the link later, but I remember reading in European Car an article that detailed replacing the integral voltage regulator on a Bosch alternator with an external Ford unit that was way cheaper and worked better anyway.

Typically, our cars use an alternator from either Bosch or Paris-Rhone.

Make sure that the alternator you get (if replacing the entire unit) will accept the cooling air shroud assembly.

Autozone uses BEAR testing equipment - The same test equipment as the Porsche Shop I used previously. Don't let the name AUTOZONE fool you -they have the most modern testing equipment.

I have no reason to doubt the results.

Normy, thanks for the heads up, I would be curious to see what you find out.

Some repair shops will repair your alternator for much less than a reman unit.

This is so true. I took my alt. to a local alternator rebuild shop. The repair cost me a $100.00. Can't beat it. It's been on the shark for over 6 months.

Randy,

I had replaced the Paris unit on my Euro with a Bosch unit. The Bosch factory rep told me that the shroud was not required, and it did not fit the alternator that they sent me.

It has been a few years, but I remember that Bosch offered two different units that fit the car (one was their #315 model). I think that one of them was a rebuild and did accept the shroud.

Of course, not using the shroud required finding a nice airflow spot for the temp sender that lives in the shroud hose.

Picky irrelevant point: a "bar"~ 14.7 psi, not 20 psi
