DFW engine tech session suggestion

Work to be done:
1; Install crank in case, with seals, flywheel and torque girdle.
2; Hang rods, install rings, bearing shells.
3; Install piston/rod asm in case and torque.
4; Install oil pump, pickup tube, water pump, knock sensors, TPS.
We can do it at my place way out west, or we can do it at a more - shall we say, metro-centric location? I'm hoping Sterling will visit, as he's done this before. I'm sure we can struggle through if not. All are welcome, however, more than 4 or 5 around one block will get a bit dicey.
RSVP here, if you're interested. The balance of the top engine will go together the following week, prolly out at my place over the week.
Good time to get rid of that POS gearbox at the same time 8>)

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

I guess I'll start around the crack of noon, or maybe a bit sooner on Sat 3/30. If we have some inspiration from Sterling, and follow the book fairly carefully I can see about 3-5 hours of work. More or less depending on the amount and type of beer consumed. I'd like to get it to the point of being able to spin the oil pump and see the oil circulate a bit.
If there's interest, we could also attach the heads time permitting. That part of the job requires a bit more energy, and we may not get to it, but I'll have them along in case.

Roger's is a short distance from the DFW airport. I am more than an hour away. someone could collect you David I'm sure, or you could grab a rental and be there in about 15 minutes.
Sterling, I haven't put the rings on yet, and would do that as soon as I got the pistons, everything is still at the machine shop. I'm supposed to collect the block, crank, girdle, and rods tomorrow. I'll not get the heads in time to do that this weekend but the lower end should go together well. I have access to a ring compressor, or maybe I'll just buy one for Roger.
Pete(machinist) and I were looking at the oiling passages in the girdle and I'm going to do a bit of cleaning up of the casting down there. some of the return galleries have flash on them, and the intake passages have some sharp ridges I'm going to radius, and maybe increase the main journal via a bit that services the 2/6 rods. Just a light cleanup of the oiling paths to reduce flow restriction. This will hopefully be done before I get to Rogers house, but it may spill over a bit. I need to get it done in advance so that I can fully clean it before installation.
We have paint pens, and I'm buying the girdle goo tomorrow.
Looks like a go. Hope Curry comes over and gets his damn stinkfoot shoes.

Cya all soon!

I would love to come, but don't think I can make it this weekend.
Maybe you can give one of the guys a camera to just focus on shooting everything and you can start a good picture based thread on this. I have 200 or so photos from my engine build that I want to put on on Flicker or something. I know allot of guys on here would love to see a fresh, clean 928 block and the steps involved in doing this. I never separated my case halves thinking i could do more damage then good, so I am very curious to see what kind of fun you get into.
As for piston ring compressor any one should do. If i had to do it again though I would buy a ring compressor thats low profile. From the top ring to the bottom its probably about 2". The Ring compressor I have is like 6-8" tall. It's somewhat clumsy and larger then it needs to be for our cars, so if your looking for a ring compressor, i would look for a low profile one as thats all you will need.
Ive seen the page before, i love your site BTW.
I just realized your block looks dull or rough as opposed to the factory which almost seems polished. Is this what happens when US Chrome does their thing? Do they put it in some type of chemical bath that etches the aluminum block or something?
Anything I need to bring?
I owe you for dinner, when are we doing your bumpers?

As for the bumpers, sigh.... My painter is a good guy and does good work, but our idea of 'schedule' is very different. Last I heard, it was going to be ready Thur. which I interpret to mean next Monday, or perhaps Tuesday. I cut him some slack because he's working on his Airframe & Powerplant mechanic rating at school. I'm guessing bumpers next week It looks like I'll be fairly busy the rest of this week.
