I wanted to post this as a response to Chris' post but that got bastardized into a flame war so I decided to start a new thread.
For whatever it's worth, I have this story to tell - Sometime towards the end of last year I took a day off and did some laps at a local track (Zwartkops). I was lapping consistent 1'18"s and found I could manage 1'17" when I let the revs run up to 7k (limiter spring thingy removed) to keep momentum coming out of the two corners leading onto the longest straights. I don't like revving that high so I decided to keep the 1'17" laps as an ace up the sleeve and settled for looking after my crank whilst running more 'sedate' 1'18"s. (BTW, in POC time trials the closest 928 behind me was a S4 doing 1'23"s.)
It was an 'open trackday' and there were all sorts of cars on the track. After a few laps I started closing in on a M5 and I could see he was on the limit through the tight sections but would open up a gap on the straights. I pulled the ace from my sleeve and was on his bumper going into a fast lefthander at the end of the short pit straight. Coming out of the sweeper you are immediately in the braking area for a r/h hairpin. He let me through, stayed on my bumper down the long back straight but as soon as we got to the tighter sections I shook him off with ease.
Then I saw another spicy target up ahead - A Nissan Skyline GTR. I started reeling him in also, but the session was over and the marshalls flagged us...
About a week later a local car mag did a TV shoot at the same track with professional race drivers testing some of the latest performance saloons and a few sportscars. They had a M5 and a GTR there also and the lap times were posted on the web somewhere. I just did a search but couldn't find it. The article must've been pulled...
Anyway, I know I could beat both the M5 and Skyline GTR at the track with relative ease and I was quicker than the published lap times (allthough I can't remember exactly what they were)
That's my track story, for whatever it's worth... <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" /> <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" /> <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Thats great! My hats off to you for those stellar times! 7k is pretty high yes, have you thought about having the crank drilled? I'd like to see those times just to know what the 'pros' timed in at compared to you. Hehe, wanna offer any track tips up here in washington :-). I agree that other thread was destroyed, and I hope it ends soon, or is pulled. Great times and keep on exposing the 928 on the track!

Any good fighter pilot will tell you that within reason, an average pilot in a great plane will always get smoked by a good pilot in an average plane. Here we see a better pilot in an equal or better plane- the results speak for themselves.

'83 Euro 5spd, obviously not stock, but at that time it was still street legal. You should see what the local Porsche mag have to say about my Shark. I've since been converting it into a full on race car.
And yes, I do rev to 7k on occasion. What's so weird about that?
