Auto trans slow to shift when cold
My auto trans has been slow to shift to the next gear when cold, when hot it shifts fine. Also when cold the transmission emits a howling noise after the engine has been started which goes away in a few seconds. After reading the archives, it seems that a fluid and filter change is necessary.Over the weekend I did the fluid and filter change but I still have the same problems. The old fluid was slightly brown in color and there was zero crud in the pan.I am wondering if I need to pull the governor and clean it. If so has anyone BTDT. I remember reading one of Wally's posts stating that the governor could be removed with the transmission still in the car, but it looks like the differential will have to be pulled to allow access to the area where the governor is located. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Bruce -
I'm not familair with Rebuilding the Governor but I do have a question.
When you did the transmission service - did you check the fluid level while the car was running (warm) and in nuetral on level ground?.

Perhaps our resident trans man Steve 'The Cat' Cattaneo will provide help on this one.
Steve told me of a shift technique for freeing up a balky governor that helped for awhile, but eventually I had to do a rebuild of the trans.

To remove the governor on an A22 Trans the diff. has to be removed.
When a valve in any transmission sticks its because of contaminate in the fluid, from normal ware of clutches and bands, planetary, or from a internal failure, have the transmission flush, If a flush does not work try driving the car in 2nd gear as soon as the transmission shifts into 2nd gear pull the shifter down to 1st then back into 2nd, do it about 20 times. The governor should free up. But with that wine it sounds like the transmission is failing.
