Default My son's first ride in the 928

My son was born on May 20, 2006 so he's closing in on 2 years old. Great kid and he is truly a blessing. When he would be having one of his rare "moments" we would go out and sit in the 928 until he calmed down. Even from a very early age (<1 year) he seem to know the car was special. When he was first learning to talk we were sitting in the car one evening and I asked him "What do we say to slow cars?" He looked at me and I said "Bye Bye". Well he just about pissed himself laughing and from then on whenever I asked him what we say to slow cars he would get an impish grin and say "Bye Bye."
Too Fun

Well up in Canada our cars tend to spend about 1/2 the year in hibernation. The 928 has been tucked away under car cover in the side of the garage for the last 6 months but lately my son has taken to peeking under the car cover every time we walk by.

Today he helped me connect the battery and put the battery charger on in anticipation of firing her up over the next few days. The snow is gone, the stone chips which have been spread on the streets over the winter for traction have been swept up.....just about time.....

Well as luck would have it we ran out of milk tonight so I told my wife, I was taking the car. Now my wife has always said my son cannot ride in the car until he has the capacity to make his own decision. I asked him if he wanted to go in the car and he ran around the house chanting "poorsha, poorsha". I took that as an affirmative.

I installed the car seat in the back, put him in and fired the car up......the kid cried......he kept pointing to the front seat and was crying to no end (he's used to sitting in the front passenger seat with the car at rest)....until I back out of the garage and his tears turned to the biggest grin he's ever had, he knew this time we were going somewhere.

Mom jumped in the passenger side and we were off, slowly at first but when a little voice from the back said "Dad...zoom, zoom..." I blipped the throttle a bit. Well the entire ride squeals of delight came from the back and "poorsha..zoom, zoom."

Between my son's "Dad zoom" and my wife saying "Stop it or I'm going to be sick" it was a pretty fun ride. We took the long way home and driving up a long windy hill my son started humming to the exhaust sound, grinning the entire time.

I have to say that has been the most fun I've ever had in that car. He may not remember it when he gets older, but I sure will.

When we got home we settled in for a movie, searching for something to watch, Risky Business was playing on a movie channel. Now that is not a show I would let my son watch but when I flicked to it the 928 chase scene was on and he was glued. We watched for a bit and when the 928 rolled to the dock, and into the water my son pipes up "Oh no....Poorsha fall down..Oh no!" He was very concerned.

Too funny.

Sorry for the long winded post but I had to share my first 928 day since sometime in late 2007, and my son's first ride.

There is no substitute

Absolutely a fantastic story.

Me as a kid, asking my dad to go fast in a 911 in 1976.

The kid will remember it.

Nice. My 7 year old daughter has got the hang up on Porsches now too..thanks to dear 'ol dad. When she was 4-5 I would give her a buck to say Porsche correctly. My GF would always think its a little corny but i swear it helped her pronounce other words correctly too. Now when she rides in it she complains before we get in it that its too loud and I might go fast. I then remind her about how all her school mates though it was cool and she suddenly changes her mind, lol. We will be watching the tv and a car commercial or a show about a fast car will come on and she always tries to butter me up with the whole "dads Porsh-Uh is faster right?" lol, what can you say to that?

Rich,

Great story, thanks for sharing. At this age, he probably won't remember this ride, but the car will be part of his vague first memories. And the time with you as well.

Yup, that one's going to be doomed to a life of late nights and early weekend mornings freezing his knuckles off in the driveway or garage tinkering with a car to get just that right 'zoom zoom'.

Classic.

At age 3, my son started telling me, "Go faster," when we rode in the 928. Only when we rode in the 928.

My wife says he tells her to slow down when they're in our Hyundai.

Smart boys, these 928 kids.

Great story and great read.

I have had the exact same situation a number of times. Now when my son and I go out my wife stays home.

figgen... you must be one of the good dads.

A fine tale. The V8 gene rules.

Keep it up.

G'luck.

Great post Figgen - too cool!!!
This is how you'll justify keeping the 928 in years to come! I have two of them backing me up :-). FYI Britax Starriser (later Fischer Price Safe Voyager Booster) fit the back seats.

Beautyful story figgen !

My son just turned 1, and I think I`ll have my GT ready for his second birthday He`s already showing a big interest in cars, and whenever I play one of 928 Motorsports` sound clips he smiles and shake his head

I was wondering about this actually. With the 928 only the lap belt is present, so how do you deal with the shoulder harness portion of it to make sure it's safe?

Now, if you can just keep him from falling into the civic/supra/eclipse tuner crowd......

wish you luck...!

Very nice.......I have found memories of my dads "sports car" as a kid......mom drove the embarrassing station wagon that we (my sister and I) would not let her pick us up from school in, she had to park around the corner so the other kids wouldn't see us......

BUT when dad picked us up we wanted him to drive right in front.....granted it was "just" a 1975 280Z....but that was the coolest car in the world to me in 1980....well beside a Ferrari 308....

Every time my Nephew (now 11) is around my house and we go anywhere....he always asks in an excited voice..."Can we take the Porsche!" & when I saw no....he says "but the other cars aren't cool"
