Looking for an alternative to $450 Aero mirrors.
I'm not expecting $16 ebay mustang mirrors but sub-$100 would be nice.
I don't mind searching used parts for them and refinishing them.
Heated & Pwr controls are not necessary.. Since nobody
else drives my car and it's only out in the summer.
I've seen a few pics here and there of other types people have gone with,
can anybody chime in with some options?
Thanks,

So are you saying you don't want aero mirrors, or you just don't want to pay $450 for them? I can see not wanting to spend that much, but then again, the aero mirrors don't really do much for me. At the same time there aren't many alternatives when you look at your mounting options.

JHowell,
Aren't the Miata mirrors similar? You need something on a freestanding stalk instead of integrated, which is what most new cars have.
I think the Mini Cooper has them on stalks, but I think they look about like ours.

C5 corvette mirrors were suggested awhile back. Could be ok and should be cheap too.
The Aero's really are the only way to go if you ask me though.........i still have my flag mirrors though. Guess I am not willing to pay that much either.

try C5. I bet you could find a pair for less than $100. Have fun mounting them and making the wiring work though. It can be done but its not going to just bolt on.

The miata mirrors do sit on a stalk but the problem with trying to retrofit them is that the stalk will have to be modified so the mirror sits properly on the door. Once fitted they need to be repainted. And finally, there's the issue of wiring it. It all seems like a pain if you ask me. I also forgot, if the stalks aren't large enough to cover the area the flag bases covered, you're going to have a lot of bruised/scuffed paint on the door exposed. So you eliminate one eye sore and create another.

I'm not concerned with the wiring. Don't need heat or pwr.
I'm lucky that paint's not a big issue either. Rustoleum gloss black and some clear coat
looks surprisingly good on the Black.
I'll check out the C5 and the miata.. I have to say I'd rather have nothing to do with a Miata if possible.

I always try to budget at least $1000 for cosmetic upgrades for my sharks each year.
8" H4's = $500
Aero mirrors plus Paint = $600-$650
Not always an option to some but for me it is important to have these two upgrades. My newest purchase just happened to be the same color as a set of mirrors I had previously bought for my crispy one, so that leaves me with just the H4's to worry about this year.
Next year I can get the Aeros for my meteor metallic 928, and then all three will be done.

If the 928 experience means more to you than settling for cobbled-together parts, take the time and do things properly. If not, jack it up and put a hood scoop on it. At that point, Walmart will suffice for trim pieces. I thoroughly understand your thought process. I just think that "settling" , or making-do are the domaine of those who take advantage of highly mass produced pony cars that have no defined pedigree. That being said, I do not espouse a total purist approach. I have the GTS rear and the aeros on mine. I just think that if you paid the cover charge, "you ought to buy a round or two while you're there" (paraphrasing). G

Geese George, Glad you chimed in, I was just about to take out my S/C and was heading to Walmart and buy the Super-Turbo inlet booster. Now, I'm not sure why I spent $10.00 for a micro bottle of Porsche Black paint when Rust-oliem would work just fine.
Seriously sometimes it's worth doing it right the first time, as your budget increases you will have to do over anything you shorted yourself in the beginning.
I have an 86 and not sure what all the talk about different mirrors mine are fine and have no reason to change them, can't you see correctly?
The factory wheels always bothered me, I spent hours trying to clean, sand and paint and they still looked lousy to me. I was very patient and found a Rim set I was looking for at the right price. Moral of the story, I wanted to get a new set but insisted on seeing if it would look better by working with what I had to save a little money. Save your money, get what you really want; a after market slap on won't help the looks of your car.

Thanks guys but I'm actually just trying to find out if anyone has had any success with
anything other than aero mirrors. Believe me I've got plenty of $$ in to my car and
have plans for lots more. If aero is the only route so be it.
I also have no plans of doing anything shoddy to her. The paint on my car is 22 years old.
A little time spent carefully spray painting the mirrors will result in a perfect match to my car.
It's about the only benefit to black paint that I've found.

I don't agree with what you said above at all.
