I have just had a set of Kumho 712's put on my 928 and as of yet (I know it's still early on) I am very pleased with them. They drive nice and don't seem harsh or noisy (they are 18's) and for my style of driving (don't want to get tickets, take care of my "baby") they are more than enough tire for me. I bought them at America's Tires for 175 each for the rear and 155 each for the front. They also used their Hunter whiz-bang system for balancing.
They were Dunlops. I don't know their exact name, 9000 something. I never paid much attention to them since they had almost no tread and I was too worried about having to get a second mortgage on the house to replace a set of 18" tires. They did grip like crazy on dry pavement, but if you ever ran over a spot where someone had spit... lookout, hydroplane city. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
Pirelli's are not what they used to be.
The Kumho's are not what they seem either. I have been told be several owners that the Kumho's wear out very quickly compared to others. I had Kumho's on my 944, but sold it so I didn't get more than a few thousand miles on them.
I have had more people tell me to get Falken's, so I did. The best "bang for the buck" as the saying goes.
My 928 is very quiet now also, but it had Goodrich's all weather on before, so the high-speed tread pattern makes the difference.
Im also running the Kuhmos.

I don't know about the wear yet- but at half the cost of other tires, who cares!
Mine are quiet on the road and a t speed- they seem to grip like velcro to the corners, and Ive had a few comments from my passengers to this same effect.
I read reviews on these and they were definately given a good strong positive vote for any driving other than snow.
I would buy them again- and I plan to run them on my other sports car as soon as the Dunlops wear out!
To the contrary Porschedriver, I'm finding that my cheap Kuhmo 712 tires are lasting much much longer than the ridiculously expensive G Force tires they are replacing. In hard driving they tend to let go just a smidgen before the G Force tires but with the great balance of my 928 S4 and the street driving I do, I can live with that.
IMHO, the Kumho 712's are good for the money, but mine DEFINITELY don't have the grip that my RE-730's had. I even went up from a 265 to a 275, and although that seems like a small numerical increase, the actual change was more than 10 mm. I measured the 730's before removal, and the Kumhos after install and the Kumhos were an inch wider. Even with this extra width the rear steps out alot more easily on my favorite exit loop on my way to work. I do like them mind you, and I really like the price, but they don't grip as well. For everyday driving though, it won't make a bit of difference, just when pushed hard. <img src="graemlins/icon107.gif" border="0" alt="[icon107]" />
I concur with Chris and Reptileis: good in rain, not a grippy as one might expect in dry, quiet on most road surfaces (a bit noisy on a few); seems to be wearing fine at 5,000 miles; great price. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
I just mounted Kuhmos and have notice MORE noise than the Goodrich T/A Comp tires that came on the car when I bought it. The Kuhmos sound almost like truck tires from inside the car. Kind of a "rrr-rrr-rrr-rrr" sound that gets louder the faster the car goes. Maybe I have a bad tire? I have them inflated at 38 psi. What are others running the psi at?
Anyone using the Bridgestone Potenza S-03's? Feedback appreciated.
They employ the newest Uni-T technology which is supposed to make them stick like glue, wet or dry. I used up 3 sets of Firestone Uni-T's when they were first introduced (on other cars in the early '90's), and they were the ONLY tire for me in these Florida rains. I'm planning on getting a new set of tires in a month or so and wanted to try them out.
I've watched these tire t(h)reads for awhile, and I've never seen a reference to the tires I have, that came with my car, when we bought it. They are Uniroyal Tiger Paw GT4V's. Seems to me to be pretty quiet, grip plenty good for me, heck, I've gone around three loops of a freeway cloverleaf (had 35mph warning signs)at over 55mph w/o touching the brakes, no squalling rubber, was like being on rails! Also, the wear life seems also very good, getting close to 9,000 miles on the clock, since purchased, and the rear tires seem to me NOT to have much wear at all, should easily get another 9,000+ out of them. Brakes haul me down fast when I need or want to, wet or dry, everything seems to be working great. What might I be missing? <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
I am curious as to what everyone thinks. I almost put the Kumho's on my 928 after my 944, the price was more than right and feedback about them was excellent. But a couple of racers and some enthusiasts warned me that they wear out quickly under hard driving compared to others. My 944 stuck to the road well, rain or shine and I had my doubts. Especially when each tire priced at less than $100 per tire w/ mounting and balancing.
But the Falkens were the next in line. At $119 a tire w/mounting and balance, I was hooked. I spoke to several tire stores across the country and everyone agreed that the "bang per buck" was the Falkens. They seem to perform exactly like the Kumho's wet or dry and the ride is much improved over the Goodrich's that were on them. I had Pirelli P7's on first, and that was one of the worst tire's I have ever experienced on a Porsche. They did get good traction in gravel and snow, but noisy and traction was less than perfect on the pavement. Wet, they were fine.
Anyone else got some experience with other tires? I can state that some Penske's I had mounted on my 924 actually were pretty good wet or dry, just alittle noisy on open highway. Lasted 28,000 miles and still had plenty of tread before I sold it.

Larry, I run my Kuhmo's at 38psi. Perhaps the rears make a bit more noise than my G Force tires did but my car in general is loud so it doesn't bother me.
