I have pics but can not up load. Pads are completely different in design otherwise I would use the replacement pad if it would fit.

I would like to see a pic too

When i realized how the S4 pad fits i found it to be quite a simple and nice solution as in its not really attached anyway, it slides on, but can only slide on when the piston is removed. You cannot remove the piston if its riding in between the timing chain, I thought it to be quite an elegant and simple solution.

To think that the earlier ones were screwed in would surprise me but perhaps thats why it was changed. I would love to see a pic of it.

I just looked at PET and tensioner assemblies for both engines have the same part number.

sounds like maybe someone did a mechanics special on your tensioner somehow.

Pics are mandatory now at this point so we can straighten you out.

I have full records of the car and valve covers have never been off. So tensioner/pads are from the factory. If someone can post the photos I have this would be great. I am at work now and would be able to E-mail them tommorow when I get home. Will check back tommorow. Thanks.

sorry but because there is no record of cam covers being off doesn't mean they've never been off.

if you can take a pic that we should be able to sort it out. because what your describing does not sound like factory

If someone can post the pics I have this will solve the debate. Also in the WSM in section 15 page 120 there is a exploded view of the head and shows the same pad that I have on MY85 you can also see the 2 holes for the screws also 15 133 shows the solid black pad. This pad is solid on all 4 sides and sets directly on top of the piston.

That tensioner is definitely not what i am used to seeing.

That pad is so fat i think you are fine running it. you could probably put a million miles on it and it would still have meat on it. Thats one good thing about this pad design.

Actually M28/43 Is this not an S4 block, or what is an M28/43? I am pretty sure the S4 is an M28/41 and 42 depending on transmission type. A GT is a 47, what the heck is a 43? Is an 85 32V really a 43? That predates the S4 yet it has a later number? Odd, Im glad i saw this pic though, i wasn't going to post it but maybe someone knows what's up.

I am not sure about this either. Those pads are much different than in my MY '88

In this pic you can see how the chain has worn into the pad, it won't be a long time till it starts breaking chunks off I am sure. If you are only looking for another 20K then go for it and run them but if you are looking for 100K we need to figure out the pads. I can't wait for Kilbort to get his engine apart as I am sure that this is just one of many examples of how Porsche made changes thru out production.

Thanks for posting the pics for me. The pad is not brittle and feels very solid not sure of the exact material seems like nylon/silicon in feel/looks. I am going to go ahead and continue to use it.
