with ignition switch disconnected from loom, everything still works....engine still runs. all ignition switch does is allow you to crank engine. switch off, remove key, pull connector off the back...........everything still carries on!
anyone had this problem before?

I had something similar in my 928 S2. Mine is '85, LHD, European-specs.
The previous owner put in an aftermarket alarm and intercepted the yellow wire that goes to the ignition switch. When I took out the alarm, the car was totally dead (no starter or ignition) until I reconnected the yellow wire. It sounds to me like the previous owner of your car has unhooked certain wires from the back of the ignition plug and connected them straight together, bypassing the ignition switch. I would start by hooking all the wiring up to the ignition switch in the correct order and then seeing where you are. Clearly the ignition has been tampered with so I'd get that out of the equation first.
Your high idle speed is an unrelated issue I suspect.
That's all I got. Sorry.

many thanks bryan.
i have wiring diagrams, and have checked the connections on the rear of the ignition switch.....all seem ok. the fuse panel has many 'scotch locks' added to various incoming looms. just wading thro those at the moment. these 928's certainly have a few wires!!!!
