I want to replace the stock Blaupunkt cassette player in my 1987 S4 with a CD/MP3 player. Does anybody have a good recommendation on a Blaupunkt unit? I'm not into amps and subs and stuff, just want to upgrade with a better Blaupunkt and keep it looking 'stock' on the console without too much bling.
I would like to get one that is plug-n-play or close to it.
Post some pictures of the recommended units installed in a 928 console.

Not blaupunkt, but probably worth a look: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/409120-new-clarion-and-alpine-receiver-thoughts.html

if your dead seat on Blaupunkt then check their website for current offerings. I think they make silver colored units like most other manufacturers now though. But if you want older models then try ebay.

If you really want a more stock look you'd be better off looking into a radio from Becker. They're overpriced, unreliable, and 5 years behind the times when it comes to features, but it's German so what can you expect?

David,
IF you know anyone in Germany, do a search for a while of German eBay. www.ebay.DE
There are a lot of interesting Becker radios listed there - new models that aren't available in the USA. Most sellers won't ship to the USA, but a friend can receive it after you buy it, then trans-ship it to the US for you.

I went with SW Stereo with the Blaupunk Bermuda MP35 I think. He makes/sells the adapter so you use the existing wiring, just plug and play. I hate cutting up car electronics.

Pete,
Thats a pretty cool looking head unit if you want the "stock" look. Or at least closer to stock look in an aftermarket HU.
Personally if you must have one, i like the Becker or Porsche 220. I think CDR 220, or the harman/kardon traffic pro if you can even find one of those anymore. I wish they updated that thing! I know they made a traffic pro II but for some reason it was only available for Ford's last i remember. It didnt look as good as the original one though.
Actually Harmon/Kardon factory refurbishes all their things, you may want to try contacting them for one and see if its available.

I've kept the factory unit, and simply wired in a cassette-adapter to a MP3 player that lives in the ashtray. Works decent. Incredibly affordable. Stock appearance.

How very timely!
I just upgraded this weekend to the Blaupunkt Hamburg unit and I'm thrilled with it.
It has bluetooth, USB, auxilary input, and CD.
Here's an install of the finished product. The bluetooth is awesome. I talk into the mic and the other person is heard through the speakers. Oh I love it.

I bought it from crutchfield.com for $199. Was $100 off normal price.

My Australian-delivered 1986 "S3" is completely original and I want it to stay that way. The radio still works. I insert a small (6cm x 3cm x 2cm) $40 fm-transmitter into the cigarette lighter socket, tune it to any of four allowable fm frequencies on the radio, and connect my tiny (3cm x 2cm x 1cm) $65 Apple iPod mp3 shuffle to the transmitter. I then have many hours of my choice of music through the car's 8-speaker stereo system for a total of $105 Australian. For a concours d'elegance, simply pull out the transmitter and replace the cigarette lighter. Everything remains original. For a bonus I can take my Ipod in my pocket for more music when I leave the car.

Peter B
