Default Rear window Trim Re-paint

I finally got around to re-painting the trim on my rear windows. Thought I would share the results even though it is really hard to see the vast improvement in these pics. I used a trim paint that looks really good in my opinion that I bought from O-reilly's. The rear trim peices now look brand new. It only took about an hour per side. 55 minutes for all the taping, 5 minutes to paint it.

looks good Mike! What kind of prep did you do before (sanding etc?) and how many coats did you use? Any clearcoat or just go with the black? And is it satin?

I'm sick of trying to keep mine 'black' with back-to-black etc. and think this might be a good longer-term solution.

VERY NICE!
It's all in the prep work. The difference between any good paint job and a crappy one.

Would love if you could report back after a few months and let us know how it holds up. I did a touch-up on the door lock ring last year and it's scratched again (I'm the only one that uses the car, and I haven't scratched it), so clearly that didn't work.

I dry-sanded the trim down with 400 grit. This was after I had taped it up. I then blew all of the old paint dust off with my air hose, and finally wiped it down with some paint thinner very carefully as to not let any soak into the tape and ruin the paint. The trim was smooth but still had some fine scratches in it for the new paint to adhere to. I put about three medium coats on.

The paint was just a "trim black" and looks like a satin or what I call semi-flat black after it dried. Looks perfect to me.

So what happened when your wife saw that you used the Baby Blankets for your overspray?

Sharp work Mike.

Why didn't you just take the trim off?

Sorry such a long delay. Haven't logged back on since yesterday. I painted it on the car because I was afraid that I would booger up the paint again trying to re-install the trim. Also, any trim that I have ever tried to remove always ends up being bent just enough where it won't re-install just right again. After watching Richard try to install his brand new windsheild trim over at Ed's house, it convinced me to just leave it on the car.

Nice. Mine one day will need the same.

I personally like the corvette shirt as "disposable paint shirt". Just really glad you did not wear one of your good DFW 928 shirts to work in!

Looks good from a distance, can you take a close up shot too?

This might be a great solution for alot of us.

We must have been separated at birth because:

1. We are both balded.
2. We both have '87 S4s.
3. My rear window trim needs repainting also.

Thanks for the tip, that was how I was thinking of repainting mine.

I was in the neighborhood during lunch and grabbed my camera from home.

I sprayed my lock trim and some of the other trim with rattle can paint. I used a lacquer etching primer, then a lacquer sealer primer, and finally two coats of "trim paint." Mine is holding up fine and it has been almost a year.
