Hello all,

On the big Brembo calipers, such as the 993TT and the 951 Turbo S brakes, there is a certain way of making the pads "seat", and I am under the impression that I am doing something wrong. The rotors were turned, and the pads replaced with R4S (Porterfield). The original pads have a "silencer" disk that actually "glues" with anti- squeal stuff, to the pads, and then sits INSIDE the brake cylinder (two each in this case, all around).

I did not replace these "silencers", as I have done a brake job on a friends car (same brakes, pretty much) and did not use them either, with no issues (no squeak), and he never mentioned the “clack” as I will below.

I have had these pads on my car now for about 2 weeks, and after repeated attempts to "seat" the pads (high and low speed stops, quick and slow deceleration), they still "Clack" back into place after having used them in reverse, and then forward again. The car stops very well, but I DO smell brake pad under heavy, repeated use, such as I have before when “braking” in mundane car's brakes. That smell usually goes away when the pads are seated.

I may take off the wheels to see if they are in the correct position still, but as you that have used these Brembos know, there is a large hinged spring that keeps them in place.
FYI, I used "Wurth" anti-squeal past on all pads. No Squeaks, but no seating either.

Any ideas?

"Seating" or "Bedding" new pads is not much more than getting the pads and the rotors worn to match each other perfectly. Doesn't really have anything at all to do with how new pads fit in the caliper frames.

I guess the first thing I'd check is to see how much play there is where the pads fit into the caliper frames. There should be almost none forward-back as the wheel rotates. Same as pushing teh pad forward then back in the caliperframe, same as the wheel does when direction reverses under braking.

Going from foggy memory (been a couple years since I did the 928 brakes...) I don't recall if the pads in that car have those little leaf spring clips on the trailing end of the pad in the frames. They get used on some of the sliding-caliper cars (non-P-Car) but just don't remember on the 928. Somebody help me out here.

The anti-rattle pads that attach to the brake pads on my S-4 were held on with a very thin peel-n-stick adhesive. Having the pad centered when they are installed is kinda important, but there really shouldn't be much movement there anyway. Experimenting, I reused the old rattle pads after scraping the old adhesive off. A very thin layer of the orange hi-temp RTV was applied and the pads installed. Seem to work at least as well as the old ones-- no squeels, no pad rattles either. If you left these out due to cheap (not related at all to 'chirp') then consider my poor-man's method as a possible option.
