Upper Ball Joint Boots
Hi,
About to embark on an upper ball joint boot replacement, and I'm wondering what the best tool is for separating the joint? A pickle fork is out of the question - too much chance of damaging the joint. Has anyone ever tried the ball joint press set offered by Harbour Freight? Will this tool work? Any other leads on where to get a tool that will do the job and leave the joint intact? Thanks!

that would be baum tools 941-927-1414.
for the a-arm ball joint, KK-129-0, adjustable ball joint extractor, $143.64, and for tie-rod ends, KK-129-1, universal tie-rod separator, $95.21. yessiree that's it uh huh. <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" />

Hi Brian, I'm a mechanic that has many years of experience and I have never used a balljoint removing tool. In fact I don't know a mechanic who even has one! If your really lousy with hammer direction I suggest you buy the tool, if not, just hit the stub axle with a FBH, the last two letters stand for big hammer by the way. I recently did this when I changed the top control arms on my car see (996 wheels on a 928 here's how), they came apart no problem. If there's is a problem use some type of lever on the top arm, a piece of wood would be appropiate as it won't damage the aluminium. All the best
pickleforks on the upper a-arm ball joint will chip below the groove that holds the boot retaining ring. don't do it. btw, that harbor freight tool will not work. spend the cash on good tools as you might use them from time to time.
Thanks for the advice guys. I will probably try the Wally P. "2 hammer method" first, and if that doesn't work I suppose I'll have to break down and buy the baum tool... Thanks for the help!
