Default First 928 facial

Ah yeah....hi my name is Stefan, I own a 88 928 and I have a problem.

The other night I noticed an ever so slight bit of steam coming from the passenger headlight area. About every 3-4 weeks I need to add some water/coolant as my coolant warning light comes on. My reservoir has a small fatigue crack near the cap so I suspect I'll be ordering one soon.

I wanted to check the hoses in the area of steam so i closely examined the hoses and clamps to make sure there wasn't another concern/project.

I ran my fingers over all the hoses and clamps (wait for it) especially the overlfow hose from the reservoir to the top radiator nipple. I checked the nipple closely, wiggled it and BAM facial of green! I guess blau strudel couldn't hold out any longer. Funny but lesson learned is not to get too close I guess. The breather snapped mid thread.

Part in question is Breather Adaptor (aka Top Radiator Nipple) pn# 928.106.443.02. Is this something the local Porsche dealer would stock?

Also curious if the pressure switch on that same line can malfunction (pn#928.641.513.00)?

Thanks

And yes, that pressure switch should be on your shopping list too along with the hose. The pressure switch housing gets tired over time and will eventually fatigue fracture. Just another place for coolant to leak when it lets go. On the hose: I've been using regular 8mm (5/16") hose on that for a bit and it's OK, but the bend at the fitting isn't pre-formed so it isn't quite as pretty. The original one has 928 part numbers on it. That improves cooling efficiency almost .000003%, and worth it for the original look.

When I saw the thread title I thought, "He couldn't mean what I think he means by that."

You did.

Sorry to hear that, I hope it didn't burn too much. It didn't get in your mouth did it?

yeah...taste not so good. Therapy required. Luckily the engine had cooled for an hour so only warm. Thanks for the advise on the hose...good idea to replace the whole thing. I'll get with the good folks down in Dallas so I can drive this weekend.

BTW Porsche dealer here locally (Barrier) doesn't have it, stock it, support it....no surprise I guess.

I did the same thing recently (but I was too embarrassed to tell anyone).

I didn't think to take off the overflow cap before removing the hose to install this cover, and got a big load in my eye, and hair.

At least it could have taken me to dinner beforehand.

So you said this was your FIRST facial. Are you planning a second date? Maybe this time with video?

I like the factory 928 hose for the overflow. The pre-bent bit puts much much less pressure on the dainty breather adapter. On my cracked breather adapter using an aftermarket straight hose, part of the lower screw thread of the adapter stuck in the radiator. Guru who fixed it used a pick to work the broken part out.
Otherwise the fresh adapter would not screw all the way into the rad.

How did I surmise the straight hose maybe putting stress on the adapter, I gathered from looking at the abrasion mark on the hood where the hose was rubbing against it.

You did better than me. I was planning to purge the power steering rack with new ATF and clean up the filter/reservior in parallel with my t-belt job. Guess which job I done first.

Wife fires it up, I eat a pile of ATF, as I'm watching under the hood to make sure nothing goes wrong, and run around in a panic to clean it off of EVERYTHING so it doesn't etch the fender, hood, roof, etc...
