Post Travel advisory for SITM - Hwy 321 is washed out....

between Hickory and Lenior and you will not be able to get through. Not sure if they have a detour set up or not. Talked with DR this morning and here is an alternate route. Instead of getting off on hwy. 321 in Hickory (if you're coming in from the East) stay on I-40 and go to exit 86. These are directions to the Holiday Inn in Banner Elk from Mapquest. I am not familiar with the area in fact I've been lost before right John? Please be advised, I do not want to be responsible for anyone else getting lost.

1: Start out going East on I-40 E. 0.02 miles
2: Take the NC-226 exit- exit number 86- toward MARION/SHELBY. 0.19 miles
3: Turn RIGHT onto NC-226. 13.18 miles
4: Stay straight to go onto US-221. 24.18 miles
5: Turn RIGHT onto LINVILLE AVE. 1.63 miles
6: LINVILLE AVE becomes NC-105. 4.00 miles
7: Turn LEFT onto NC-184/TYNECASTLE HWY. 2.64 miles

Total Estimated Time: Total Distance: 45.84 miles
1 hour, 11 minutes

(With apologies to MasterCard...)

Traveling 45.84 miles in the mountains in a Taurus Wagon - 1 hour 11 minutes

Traveling 45.84 miles in the mountains in a shark - MUCH LESS (of course - unless you get behind a Taurus Wagon!)

Smile factor of shark driver Traveling 45.84 miles in the mountains - PRICELESS!

And tear them up we did, triple digits several times!! When we were done discovering new roads my trip computer said 6 miles to empty. Will have a full tank next time we head into the mountains.

For anyone who is not on the mail list, here is a post from DR.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for posting this info, I have included some notes denoted by ( )

> 1: Start out going East on I-40 E. 0.02 miles

> 2: Take the NC-226 exit- exit number 86- toward MARION/SHELBY. 0.19
miles

> 3: Turn RIGHT onto NC-226. (US-221 joins NC-226 in 1.5 miles at 2nd
light) 13.18 miles

> 4: Stay straight to go onto US-221. 24.18 miles

> 5: Turn RIGHT (at first STOP SIGN you come to) onto LINVILLE AVE (still
US-211) 1.63 miles (.75 mile if that much)

> 6: (Left at first Traffic Light) LINVILLE AVE becomes NC-105. 4.00 miles

> 7: Turn LEFT (Left at first Traffic Light) onto NC-184/TYNECASTLE HWY.
2.64 miles

My version :-) :

Take I-40 Exit 86 , go North on NC-226 (whichs joins US-221 at 2nd light) ,
stay straight no matter what (approx 35 miles), until road ends at a Stop
Sign (T intersection), go right less than one mile to first traffic light,
go left on NC-105 4-5 miles to next traffic light, make left on NC-184 and
Holiday Inn is 2.5 miles on right (for Smoketree DO NOT TURN LEFT at this
light, go straight a few miles and Smoketree in on the left )

See ya SOON !!
