Question Remove Air pump with original cats?

I am in the middle of a timing belt replacement and my air pump is “swinging free” at the moment. I would like to take it out. I plan to redo the exhaust next with modern cats to will not need an air pump. Can I use the car after the timing belt is installed without an air pump for a period of time before I do the exhaust?

I'm running my '85 with the pump disconnected and original cats still in place. I even passed emissions testing last fall. The cats go this year!

So based on all that good info, I yanked that air pump out last night.

Mine is running great w/ airpump recently removed while stock cats are still in place. Had to plug a vacuum line to get it to stop making a 'farting' noise though, back of engine compartment passenger side area.
Plan to upgrade exhaust w/ x-pipe and high flow cats down the road but in the mean time is runs fine as is.

I have non-air inlet cats that I did with my X-pipe. The smog pump belt was removed, but I haven't gutted the hardware.

There shouldn't be any issues with smog as far as the factory cats with the smog pump disabled. Just be sure to get the cats hot after driving for a while in case you don't pass the first time.

Mine and all the 928'ers in my area are running no air pumps with no problems, though we don't have emissions inspections in Florida.

Does anyone know the size of the belt from fan to crank pulley if air pump is removed on early models

(20" or 21"), depending on whether you have option M319.

I just cracked my air pump housing trying to press out the bearing without first pulling a snap ring. If someone here wants to sell their air pump or housing cheap (like $25 shipped, seized or not) I will take it.

Please PM me with details.

Ryan

Have a surplus one here in OZ - was working with no bad noises when removed a month ago. If you draw a blank sourcing one locally , it's yours for the shipping cost.
