WELLL... Funny you should ask that... My Father just installed the Devek one and he hated it. You know how it feels when the tranny is cold and 2nd gear is tough? Well it feels like that in any gear, any time now (according to him). He thinks it 'shifts wrong' now and is going back to the stock setup (has a GTS). I've driven a short-shifting car, and I can say that it gets easier to put into gear with the higher gear number on the 240z I drove with a short shift kit. 1st was very notchy and it got better with each gear. Can't say that its the same on a 928 as its a COMPLETELY different car, but there was definately some of the hard shifting my father was talking about. I don't know if a short shift kit will always do this on any car, but thats 2 for 2... My $.02

I'd also be interested to know what others say on this topic. Is it normal for it to be tough to engage, or was it possibly installed wrong? He had his mechanic install it so I can't gaurantee the work (since I didn't do it
). Is this a normal thing for short shifters? If he would ever let me drive the car, I could say 1st hand how it is. For being the enthusiast as much as I am for 928s, and having far superior knowledge on these cars, you'd think he'd let me drive it, let alone I'm his SON!! But anyway, whats the consensus from other people who have installed one of the Big 3's short shift kit? Hows the function compared to stock? How do these kits work across the board on other makes? I could understand the stiffer engagement from a shorter throw, but don't know for certain if its supposed to be that way...

I had it and removed it. 3rd, 4th and 5th were quite nice IMO. It was first and second that I did not like. I especially disliked the feel between neutral and 1st gear, very hard to move the spring over. It did not fit with the character of the car since I had lightened the steering and clutch a bit the shifter now felt out of "sync" with the rest of the tactile interfaces on the car.
I liked the height very much, but I accomplished the exact same thing by cutting my shifter down with a dremel tool.

Just shy of one inch. Also put the GTS shifter on it. REALLY made a huge difference in how the shifter feels and operates.
George Suennen (sp?) has a detailed description of the process I used on his website. He is the fellow who photographed Devek Days last year, you can find links to his home site through there.

This short shifter is supposed to actually CHANGE the ratio with not just the shorter handle, but in fact the geometry of the bottom part.
While the heaviness of the shifter is well put seth, and I appreciate your input, I am trying to figure out your other references. Is your car idfficult ot get into 2nd ANYWAY?
That spring is supposed to be strong enough so that if you are shofting quite quickly from 1 to 2, and simply PUSH forward, you will not encounter any part of reverse.

Ohhh man, could be trouble. I ordered one recently from one of the big three and got the one for my "old" car, an '82 (my fault)....told the current owner, my son, I had it and he bought it from me and I ordered the correct part for my '88 which should be in today. I'll be very disappointed if N,1,2 shifts are tougher due to the geometry change. I guess the part is too new to know at this point if some 'adjustment' is needed to correct this. I hope to be able to post my results in a week or so.
Seth, the GTS shifter is just shortened w a larger, 'tear-drop' ****, right? What did you have to pay for it and could you get different colors?

Rick: I had the pros install it. They said it was ok.
Brendan: Yes, I was not having any problem "hitting" reverse, it was just that I felt that the force necessary to move from first to second was almost double what it was before when I would only expect about a 30% increase. Further, it was just annoying to get out of neutral and bring it into first. Just to much effort. The rest of the gears felt fine. They also feel fine without it installed, if not as precise. But how much precision do you need on 2nd to 3rd?
Jim: Yes, the GTS shifter is just a rubber boot with leather on it that is shaped more ergonomically. I got mine from AGLA (Alan Gunn leather accessories) they can make it in any color you want. Make sure you specify that you want the gts shifter and you MUST have shortened the stock shifter otherwise you wont be able to cover the shifter with this shorter rubber boot.

With any shift lever...you are dealing with leverage . To do a given amount of work the shorter the lever the more effort it is going to take . SO to get a shorter throw it must have more effort , basic physics . I personally prefer the shorter movement do not notice any extra effort . But I also use a smaller steering wheel for the same reason quicker response BUT a bit harder to turn at low speed so....seldom go slow and rarely do I use first gear , I never downshift to first . If the car is moving , second gear is fine ...
