So I had a weak moment and picked up a pair of Euro H4 headlamps and am looking at lamps and sockets. There are a million threads on H4's, and Bill's great writeup too, but one thing I have not seen is whether one can avoid cutting off the original harnesses?
Just for kicks recently I got a price quote from Sunset on the various electrical harnesses in a '90. The dash harness is (of course) the worst, at $2961. Surprisingly, the second worst is the front headlight harness at $2303. Not that you can't easily splice the original sockets back on, but if I can avoid hacking any wiring, it, I will......
These folks (http://www.rallylights.com/hella/Connectors.asp) have male and female connectors of various flavors. So is it possible to take a male 9004/H5 socket with 12 gauge pigtails and a female H4 socket with pigtails, solder together, and then plug this adapter into the OEM harness? Is there enough room in the headlight bucket for such an adapter? If so, given the concerns about voltage drops and insufficient wiring size, would such an arrangement preclude using 80/100W lamps?

You don't have to cut off the original plug. You can leave it alone and just splice into the wires leading to it. Later, if you want to convert back to H5, just remove the H4 wires and tape over the splice areas. Or you can try to make an adapter, as you mentioned - there should be enough room.

Someone did an HID conversion here some time ago and managed to put the HID ballast/ignitor strapped behind the headlight assembly inside the headlight bucket.
Should have enough room for a socket/socket adapter.
If in doubt, do a simple socket/socket mockup and see if it fits under the bucket.
Wish I had known someone made male bulb sockets. Many moons ago when I messed around with my old car, I actually used some old H5 bulb bases as male sockets.

I put in an order with the folks at Susquehanna Motorsports and will post up some shots when I get these adapters made up.
